South Burlington School Safety Information

South Burlington School District is committed to the safety of our students and staff. This page contains all district safety information from across all 5 schools, as well as additional resources for families.

Each of our 5 schools and Central Office has a Crisis Planning Team, consisting of representatives from the school administration, teachers,  guidance/behavioral specialists, support staff (e.g. facilities, nutrition, and transportation), and the School Resource Officer (SRO) from the South Burlington Police Department. Furthermore, in partnership with the city, the school district has a broader SBSD Crisis Planning Team that includes senior representatives of the district as well as the Director of Public Works, the SBFD Fire Chief, the SBPD Chief of Police, and the SBPD SRO.

SBSD is focused on adhering to the Vermont Agency of Education Recommended School Safety Best Practices. In addition to emergency plans outlined on the Policies and Procedures page, we have evacuation and relocation sites for each school. There is also an emergency plan in place for SBHS Athletics.

Please note: We do not share detailed information about our safety plans and procedures for the protection of everyone in our facilities. This is done intentionally as a safety precaution so our responses cannot be anticipated.

VT S.138 (Act 29)

Governor Scott recently signed VT S.138,  which requires all public and independent schools to develop “access control and visitor management” and “all-hazards emergency operations plan” policies according to guidelines set by the Agency of Education. The access policy must at minimum require that all school sites and supervisory union and district offices lock exterior doors during the school day and require visitor sign-in. Also, the bill sets a schedule for the widespread phase-in of schools’ use of behavioral threat assessment teams, with a model set of policies and procedures developed this year, and implementation by July 1, 2025. In April 2023, members of SBSD staff attended a training focused on Developing Emergency Operations Plans for K-12 that was facilitated by Readiness in Emergency Management for Schools.
