Technology is an important source of information and entertainment for all ages. We as parents and educators frequently look at video games through the lens of our own childhood experiences with play. I know for me it was outside with the neighborhood kids and having to come home when the sun went down, or more often, when someone got hurt. Today's children seem to be exposed to less of the physical contact with peers and more with the digital contact. It is becoming, for better or worse, more ingrained into their generational culture.
So what to do? There are arguments for and against students use of technology . As a school we teach our students how to use different platforms, play video games, do presentations, and more. Ultimately we are increasing their exposure to screen time. Of course all of this exposure has academic purposes including the games. What about brain development in a two dimensional world? What about Social Emotional Learning? The answers and opinions are varied.
