Foundational Beliefs:
In our preschool program, we focus on growth, fostering self-esteem, self-control, and social competence in our practices. We believe it is a collaborative effort between students, families, and staff. Effective discipline involves compassionate guidance to navigate challenges and strong emotions. It recognizes that everyone makes mistakes and possesses inherent worth. Our school is dedicated to cultivating this understanding as the foundation for lifelong achievement.
At our school, we're all on the same team, working together to create a supportive and positive learning environment. This means taking responsibility for our actions and choices, and treating each other respectfully.
With that said, everyone makes mistakes – it's part of the learning process. When students make a mistake, it's an opportunity to learn and grow. Teachers and staff are here to assist students to understand what happened and make better choices in the future.
Respect is the foundation of a positive learning environment. We show respect by:
Following teachers' instructions and completing assignments to the best of our ability
Being mindful of noise levels in hallways and classrooms, allows everyone to focus on their work
Keeping our hands and feet to ourselves, and using kind and respectful language with classmates and staff
Taking responsibility for our belongings and cleaning up after ourselves
Taking care of all school property, including books, materials, equipment, etc.
Use appropriate language at all times
Preschool staff use a variety of age-appropriate, proactive behavior intervention strategies including:
• Maintaining realistic expectations of children
• Providing clear and simple limits
• Preventive practices
• Modeling appropriate behaviors
• Positive redirection
• Teaching of replacement skills
• Conflict resolution/Problem-solving techniques
• Providing logical and natural consequences for children’s actions
• Removing children from the situation until individual counseling is possible
Responses to maladaptive behavior:
Minor infractions will be addressed by the teacher: Preschool teaching staff strive to maintain consistent and open communication with families regarding the progress of their students.
Parent notification of minor behavioral incidents in the following ways: email, telephone, written communication, or in person
For more serious instances (e.g., physical aggression such as biting), you may be asked to come in and discuss the incident with your child’s teacher and the Supervisor of Early Childhood. The connection between home and school is very important, and children must understand that we are all communicating and working together.
Should a child’s behavior become a consistent hindrance to their learning or that of others, the parents/guardians will be contacted to schedule a conference. Referral to the Preschool Intervention and Referral Services Team (I&RS) for further assistance and intervention strategies may be required.
Extreme behavioral situations that continue, despite all efforts, will be referred to the Supervisor of Early Childhood and be handled on a case by case basis and subject to the Elementary School Code of Conduct
The school will work with parents and guardians to address student behavior issues
Care of School Property
Students will show respect for school property (books, desks, and any other school property), by keeping this property in good condition and refrain from inflicting damage. Damage to school property is subject to a monetary fine, and disciplinary action.
Cafeteria/Recess Rules
Listen to teachers and supervisors: They are there to keep everyone safe and ensure a fun recess for all
Be respectful and safe: Treat everyone with kindness, including classmates, teachers, and staff. Avoid inappropriate physical contact with others.
Clean up after yourself: Throw away trash and put equipment back in its place
Stay within designated areas: Don't wander off or leave the playground or school grounds/ cafeteria without permission
Resolve Conflicts Peacefully: If you have a disagreement with a classmate, use kind words to work it out. If you can't solve it yourselves, find a teacher or staff member to help.
