Scottsbluff Public Schools - Every Child, Every Day
Class Description
The mission of AFJROTC is to "Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community." AFJROTC is not a United States Air Force accessions program and cadets are never under any obligation to join the military. AFJROTC is a Title 10 US Code mandated citizenship training program that is designed to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service, instill personal responsibility, character, and self-discipline.
The program achieves this through classroom education in air and space fundamentals and hands on learning opportunities in a number of fun and challenging extra-curricular activities. The AFJROTC program is grounded in the Air Force core values of “Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do.” Students enrolled in AFJROTC will be expected to remain in the course for the entire year. If students are interested in the program, they will visit with their school assigned counselor at the time of registration.
A Cadet Guide is provided to all cadets to help them navigate their way through the AFJROTC program. The guide outlines cadet expectations, promotion and ribbon criteria, customs, courtesies, and some general uniform and personal appearance guidelines. Click on this link CADET GUIDE to review this document. The Uniform and Awards Operational Supplement provides details for cadets on how to wear their issued AFJROTC uniform correctly. This includes personal grooming standards and how to properly place the ranks, ribbons and badges they earn on their uniform. Our 9th thru 12th grade cadets are in blended classrooms where all grade levels attend class together. However, the 8th grade cadets will not be included in the blended classes. Their class will consist of only 8th grade students. The 1st period of the day will be designated as the period that 8th grade cadets will attend AFJROTC, and class will be held at the high school. At the end of the period, one of the AFJROTC instructors will escort the students back to the middle school in time for the start of their 2nd period.
Our curriculum consists of 40% Aerospace Science, 40% Leadership Education and 20% Physical Training. This year's AFJROTC cadets will study the following: Milestones in Aviation History (Aerospace Science): An introductory course that focuses on the development and uses of aircraft through history. Traditions, Wellness and Foundations of Citizenship (Leadership Education): Designed to prepare cadets for life after high school in the high-tech, globally oriented, and diverse workplace of the 21st century.
In addition to classroom instruction, we currently offer 10 extra-curricular activities where participation is completely voluntary. Our extracurricular activities include Academic Bol, Awareness Presentation, Color Guard, Drill Team, Flight Simulator, Model Building, Model Rocketry, Marksmanship, Raider Team (physical fitness), Robotics and Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones).
8th grade cadets will wear the Air Force uniform one day a week to school just like all of the 9th thru 12th grade cadets. Our uniform day is Monday, (or the first school day of the week), and cadets wear the uniform the entire school day (first bell to last bell). We provide all of the uniform items to the cadets at no cost to them. The only cost associated with AFJROTC is the cleaning costs. A couple of the items need to be dry cleaned once or twice a month.
