Multicultural Lit

Class Description

Multicultural Literature exposes students to diverse cultures and social realities of society today.  Utilizing a world view, the class incorporates non-fictional writings  from memoir and personal essay to literary journalism, travel writing, and hybrid forms like the lyric essay, as well as many others.  Each unit contains an emphasis on historical events, philosophical developments and cultural context that influenced the writers of each period and their readers. Major selections include The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Enchanted Air by Margarite Engle, and Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.  Poetry, plays, music and films are also utilized in order to create further understanding and points of view.
