Substitutions For Alum Powder

To see what substitutions for alum powder there are.

Don’t you just love giant beautiful rock crystals? I do too, especially the teal colored ones that you can find hiking in the mountains of North Carolina. I will be making geodes just like the ones I saw in North Carolina. I want to find out how you can make an egg geode without alum powder, which you need to make the crystals. What exactly is an egg geode? An egg geode is an egg cut in half made with alum powder and food coloring. What is alum? Alum powder is a chemical compound made up of hydrated potassium aluminum sulfate. You are probably wondering how this process works. This works because of a process called sedimentation. Sedimentation is the sediment is what falls to the bottom of a river.. I am making egg geodes because look so cool.

I got the idea when I was in North Carolina and saw real rock geodes, and I thought “I have seen people make geodes with eggs”. Ever since then I have always wanted to know what is in the egg geode that you use to make the crystals. I also want to know if you can substitute the alum in the experiments for something else. I expect good things from this project, but I believe finding things to substitute for it will be tricky. I do believe that if I do the right research and conduct my experiments well, then I will be able to find out how an egg geode becomes a crystal and how many substitutes there are for alum that will be able to make the geode just as well as alum.
