All of the ideas here would represent a point. Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Play Free Rice - www.freerice.com. Take quizzes and every question you answer donates 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme. I made a group on Free Rice that you can join with this code: 3ESS3HMK. You can compete against one another for the most rice donated.

  • Make encouragement cards for someone in need or in isolation (nursing home, those stuck at home, etc).

  • Video Chat with an elderly person or someone feeling lonely.

  • Make YouTube videos or social media posts to support/encourage students who need help and motivation learning from home

  • Start virtual tutoring sessions via Google Hangouts- many students do not have family members that can tutor them at home and are missing out on the individual instruction they need

  • Check on an elderly neighbor and possibly run errands for them

  • Cook a meal and deliver it to the front door of someone’s home.

  • Bake cookies for someone in isolation or a non-profit

  • Make thank you cards for health care workers, fire department, police, grocery store workers, etc).

  • Take your band instrument to an elderly person’s home and play for them on their front porch or lawn.

  • Give blood

  • Make a monetary donation to a credible organization. NOTE: You can donate as much as you want, but we will only give 1 point for service no matter the size of the donation.

  • Food donations are needed. Donate to Food Bank of Iowa: https://give.foodbankiowa.org/ge/covid19

  • Write a snail mail letter to a relative, family friend that lives far away or someone in need of encouragement. Take a photo of the complete address and stamped mail. Then mail it!

  • Post words of encouragement via social media on a regular basis so people have something to look forward to!

  • Pick up trash in a specific area. Take photos while collecting trash. You could also invite a friend to virtually collect with you in a separate area.

  • Volunteer for LibriVox: Read and record books in all languages for free on the internet.

Organize a community gathering online. Share good news, lead a game, invite others to laugh together.
