Homework:
I do not assign regular homework during the school year. My students work very hard throughout the school day, and I believe it is important for them to have time after school to play, relax, spend time with their families, and simply be kids. I would ask that you practice the Fundations Trick Words a few times a week. On the First day of school I will be sending them home on flashcards. You can also print them here.
Occasionally, a student may not finish an assignment during class as they are learning to manage their time and complete their work independently. When this happens, I may label the unfinished classwork and send it home to be completed and returned when possible. This is not intended as regular homework, but rather as an opportunity for students to finish work they began during the school day.
With each unit in Fundations, I will also be sending home extra practice worksheets to give students additional opportunities to practice the skills we are learning in class. These practice packets are completely optional, and students can earn prizes for completing and returning them. While they are optional, they are an important way for students to reinforce the skills they are learning in school and build confidence and independence with their reading and writing skills. Even a little extra practice at home can help students strengthen their understanding and feel more successful in the classroom.
After School help:
I will send home a permission slip with information for after school help when available for your child.

Supporting Your Child at Home
There are many simple and fun ways you can support your child’s learning at home:
Review your child’s Trick Words. Try turning practice into a game by playing Memory, Go Fish, or another simple matching game using the words.
Read with your child and talk about the story together. You might ask:
Who are the characters?
Where does the story take place?
What is the problem?
How is the problem solved?
What were the most important events?
Can you retell the story in your own words?

Read the books sent home each week in your child’s Communication Folder.
Encourage your child to work on their i-Ready Reading and Math Personalized Paths. Your child can access i-Ready by logging into Clever and selecting the i-Ready icon with the multicolored cube.
