Welcome to Communications! This course has been designed to introduce you to both communication theory and to offer you the opportunity to develop your communication skills through practical applications with the emphasis on development of practical, everyday skills. In addition to this, I would like us to learn about the role of communication in our lives. There are various approaches to speaking which we will explore. We will develop speaking and listening skills that will help you in school, in your everyday lives, and in your future lives as employees and citizens.
Activities will emphasize:
you as a speaker – building responsibility and confidence,
listening, non-verbal communication, interpersonal communication, interviewing, and group discussion,
different functions people fulfill in different group/communication situations
effective communication and roles that hinder communication
neuro-linguistic communication
the process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements
and decision making methods and leadership roles.
Each assignment, in a point-based grading system, is assigned a point value. The final grade in a course is cumulative and determined by adding up all the points earned in individual assignments.
You will be responsible for any work missed due to absence. Keep track of your missing days and come in for extra help if you would like to discuss any aspect of the work. I am available Monday through Thursday, ninth period in Room 112, or by appointment. Late work is not expected, but certainly accepted.
Please arrive on time with all materials necessary for class. Just don’t be late. Ever. It’s annoying and you will incur my wrath if you’re late.
Please leave all electronic devices IN YOUR LOCKER, IN YOUR SCHOOL BAG, AT HOME, OUT OF SIGHT, ANYWHERE I CANNOT HEAR OR SEE THEM!!!!!!
If you are absent from class, find out what you have missed.
“WHAT DID I MISS?” after the bell rings does not cut it, folks! Go to Google Classroom. Everything we ever do in class will be posted there. Please see me after school if you need me to explain what you have missed.
If I cannot read an assignment, or if it does not have your name and the assignment name and your class period, I can not grade it!
Oh, by the way, blue or black ink. Only. For some weird reason, I cannot read pencil.
Please feel free to see me after school with any questions and/or concerns. I am available Monday through Thursday, or by appointment. This is posted in Google Classroom as well. If you feel you need extra help, please come and see me.
If you have issues, either with a grade or a particular assignment, make an appointment to speak to me after class. I WILL NOT discuss any issues during class time because it is not the right time to do so.
You are required to have a binder or a folder designated solely for this subject. I will provide one for you if you do not have one. You will be receiving notes, articles, assignment sheets, et cetera, and I would like you to keep these for future reference. You need to bring it every day to class.
