Reason for Being
The BMS Library Media Program offers an environment where every student is encouraged to maximize their innate ability to wonder, grow, and look for connections in a world rich with information.
Philosophy
Being information literate is essential to being a successful contributing member of society. The Belmont Middle School Library Media Program is committed to helping each student achieve their personal success by teaching and modeling the necessary skills as outlined in the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st-century Learner (2007). Forming questions, finding information from diverse sources to answer questions, using information to create new knowledge, and sharing knowledge with others are skills that are also important in art, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and life in general. Our program also includes relevant connections with the Common Core State Standards.
A diverse collection of learning resources in a variety of print and digital formats is provided. The resources support school curriculum, reflect the interests and needs of students and staff, and echo the philosophy and objectives of the Shaker Regional School District as a whole. The collection and the program are vital components in the process of student learning and achievement and aim to foster information literacy by teaching students to work effectively, ethically, and safely with all forms of information.
Borrowing Guidelines & Procedures
Students can visit the Library Media Center individually with permission from their teacher or with their class.
Borrowing Guidelines:
3 items at a time per student account, 3 week borrowing period with renewals as needed.
Overdue, Lost, or Damaged Books or Materials:
Overdue slips are issued at least every three weeks. Fines are not collected; however, when materials are more than 30 days overdue, a student's borrowing privilege is suspended until materials are paid for or returned. Parents are notified after 45 days. Full replacement cost ($10 to $30) is charged for lost or damaged books, with installment plans available.
