Our First Forest Friday!
We went on the trail with our school naturalist, Ms. Ashley, to look for signs of fall!
Sept. 22
We read the book Camille and the Sunflowers. Then we did an investigation into sunflowers! They used their senses to touch, look with magnifying glasses, smell, and they got to eat some sunflower seeds. We made a craft of a sunflower and labeled the parts in their science journals. Then they recreated Van Gogh's famous sunflowers with water colors. Their beautiful!
Sept. 29 It was a great day at the fair! We visited all the animal barns. Everyone loved being able to touch the animals in the little barnyard!
Oct. 6 We got together with Ms. Swiz's class for a root-tootin' good time! They enjoyed some hot pancakes, sausage patties , hash browns and apple cider. Then we took them out for horse races around the peace garden. They had so much fun!
Forest Friday, Oct. 6
Our math focus today was to find 5 sticks and put them in order from smallest to largest, then largest to smallest. It was more challenging than they thought! Then we used the sticks to make the shapes we have been working on. Their last challenge was to make a capital A!
Reading Buddies
Once a week we get together with Mrs. Phillip's 4th grade class. The fourth graders love reading to their partners and later in the year the kindergarteners will be able to read their books to them!
Forest Friday Oct. 13
Today we used sticks to compare numbers up to 6. They worked in pairs to take turns rolling the dice, calling out one more or one less, and their partner had to hold up that many sticks. Then they got to go play!
Forest Friday, Oct. 20
Today they collected 10 sticks. Then I flashed a number and they had to show that many sticks. We also worked on one more, and 1 less. This week we have been learning about animal needs. They have learned that animals need food and shelter. They have learned that they can find animals in the woods by looking up for nests, looking at bushes and leaves for bugs and looking under logs and rocks.
Forest Friday, Nov. 3
This week we talked about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower! Their challenge today was to pretend they just got off the Mayflower and they had to start preparing for their new life. They got busy preparing shelters, finding food and making fires! They truly got into the spirit of survival! Then we all gathered around a "fire" for some graham crackers and marshmallows.
Everyone looked amazing! We had so much fun celebrating the 1950's with a dance party, hoola-hooping and root beer floats!
Forest Friday, Nov. 17
Our Naturalist, Ms. Ashley, led us to the forest where they learned about how animals cope with the cold. They learned about how some animals migrate, some hibernate, some are dormant, and some stay active.
Emmaline is dressed up as an animal that is Dormant! It will sleep a lot but will also get up and eat!
Raelee is dressed up as an animal that hibernates. They will sleep for months!
Jagger is dressed up as an animal that is getting ready to migrate! Those animals need a warm place for food and shelter.
Caroline is dressed as an active animal! Those animals can stay warm and find food during our tough winters!
