In 1493, Christopher Columbus sailed across what we now call the Atlantic Ocean and discovered America. As a result of this, we have a holiday named after him. Christopher Columbus was very rude to his crew and some would say, he committed genocide against the Native people. Now people are recognizing him for his rude behavior and have decided to try to change the name of the holiday from Christopher Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Writer Ethan DeWitt, decided to write about this. He said “ An effort to rename “Columbus Day” as “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” reached the New Hampshire House on Wednesday, bringing a long-standing debate over history and culture before the Legislature.” He wants people to recognize the monster Columbus was. Some people don’t want the holiday name changed because they believe that this is a very
meaningful part in American culture.
