Christopher Columbus and crew left the harbor on the Tinto River near Palos, Spain, on August 3rd, 1492, with three ships, including the Pinta and the Nina They were embarking on a journey to Asia, but instead of going around Africa to the south, as was the traditional sailing route, he planned to go west. However, Columbus went down the coast of Africa, to the Canary Islands before he sailed west. They weighed anchor in the port of the island of Gomera on September 6th, 1492. They stayed there for three days, resupplying food and water. Columbus also replaced the Nina's triangular sails with square ones so the ship could sail as fast as the others. A damaged rudder was fixed on the Pinta, and they set sail westward for Asia three days later, on September 9th, and continued to sail out into the unknown.
