In 1492 Christopher Columbus and his crew left Palos and sailed to the Canary Islands. They gathered all of the materials they needed for the long trip of Asia (water, meat, wood, etc.) On August 6th (their 3rd day away from shore; they left on the 3rd), the Pinta already had a damaged rudder. Columbus "suspected savatage" to the Pinta though they soon headed to Las Palmas. Columbus actually sailed to Gomera and back, though when he got back, he demanded for the lateen sails to be replaced with square sails to travel faster, though he wouldn't be able to get back because of the one-way wind in the middle of the ocean. It ended up taking the Pinta 20-22 days more than planned to spot land (or actual land anyway, not the large area of algae in the ocean). On September 9th, they were completely out of sight of land. Now they were on their own.
