The Oriental bittersweet comes from China, Japan, Asia and Korea.
How did it get here?
People kept using it as decoration which made it spread all over.
When was it brought here?
It came into the United States around 1860.

Yes it is in Hopkinton, one of the many places you can find it is at the Hopkinton Middle High School's parking lot.
Why is it spreading so much? (Why is it an "invasive"?)
Oriental bittersweet spreads from tree to tree in the forest canopy. It answers to a lot of light and get bigger and bigger to reach the forest canopy.
What can be done about this plant?
Mechanical controls alone won't get rid of Oriental bittersweet infestations but they can possibly and effectively prevent damage to the trees and plants that are being killed by its vines. Also less people using it for decoration so that it spreads less.
