This week students will be learning all about the kingdoms of Western Africa in the middle ages. We will cover the Mali Empire, the Ghana Empire, and the Songhai Empire.
Students will be learning about the important rulers of these empires, how their governments functioned, and other important historical moments during these time periods.
Daily Agendas: Here are the Daily Agendas for our mini Styles of Writing Unit that we'll be working on until February Break.
Homework Expectations: Students should be completing 20 minutes of reading Monday - Thursday. Students can choose to read a physical book, ebook, audiobook, newspaper, magazine, etc. They have time during the school day to go down to the library and/or pick a book from my classroom library. They also have access to an online book platform called Sora that has ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines that they should be familiar with at this point.

Week of February 9-13
We are finishing the Unit 5 Summative Tuesday. We will be starting Unit 6, expressions, equations and inequalities and will finish after Winter Break. the link below can bring you to family resources for this upcoming unit.
Unit 6 provides many chances to extend learning for students who may have been working with equations prior to this unit. This will allow students who have been working on Pre-Algebra topics to complete much of that work in class instead of taking extra time before school or during Hawk Time. Pre-Algebra topics will cover two-step, multi-step equations and inequalities with variables on both side of the equations. We will also continue to graph linear equations and begin to examine linear inequalities.
MS Math team
We had a great day of Math last Friday as 14 of our MS math team members travelled to KSC for a day long competition. I do not have final results yet but will share those once I receive them. Thank you to all the students who participated!!
We are beginning our unit on heredity and genetics. Here is a LINK to the daily agenda. Ever wonder the types of questions students have? Here is a LINK that shares the list of questions students developed that I use to plan out the lessons in the unit.
Reminder: students should come to class with their science binder, science journal, writing utensil, planner, Chromebook (in its case), and homework when applicable.
In mid-December students demonstrated their knowledge of clothing vocabulary by drawing well-dressed elves and describing them to their classmates. Students also wrote a short story that included descriptions of clothing, arrival times at school and/or home, and included many of the verbs they have acquired including is, has, walks, runs, opens, closes, wears, and sees.
We learned about French holiday traditions and decorated (and ate!) everyone's favorite holiday treat: Bûche de Noël.
In January, we have begun expanding our school supply vocabulary, are practicing asking to borrow these in French, and will discuss our hopes for the future using "Je veux" (I want).
Herzlich Willkommen zurück von den Ferien!
Students have been working hard on learning the basics in the German language. We have been learning about objects in the classroom and describing an/an versus der/die/das.
We are nearing the end of the unit and we will be describing what is in our backpacks and in our classroom verus what is NOT.
We have been learning some fun German songs as well in order to help students hear the sounds of the language and see/hear what young people in Germany like to listen to.
Practicing vocabulary continues to be essential to leveling up their language skills. Students have new Quizlet sets on Google Classroom and they should be studying 10-15 minutes of old and new vocabulary per day!
¡Felices Fiestas! This winter, we compared holiday traditions in Spain and the U.S. Why do Spaniards eat 12 grapes on New Year's Eve? How are the Three Kings different from Santa?
In January and February, we will be studying the famous Spanish-language children's song "Los pollitos dicen" ("The little chicks say"). In English, chicks say "peep peep," but in Spanish, they say "pío pío." Students will learn how onomatopoeia differs across languages. Dogs say "woof woof" in English, but "guau guau" in Spanish! Students will practice building simple sentences to describe animals, their habitats, their likes/dislikes, and their sounds. At the end of this unit, students will be able to write a creative story about an animal encounter!
To get ready for Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime performance, we studied his use of the sapo concho (a Puerto Rican toad) on his album cover. What does this animal symbolize?
