The wind patterns as you can see the arrows on the image are the directions of wind around the globe. From 30° south and 30° north the wind tries to travel straight to the equator but it turns to the left because of the movement and spinning of the earth. In the atmosphere the air rises from earth on the equator and travel back down at 30° and at the poles air rises at 60° south and north and sinks at the poles.
