Summary: (PARAGRAPH FORM, Who, What, Where, When, Why)
Christopher Columbus had reach Asia (which actually was the Caribbean). He had explored there for about three months and decided it was time to head back to Europe with all of the new treasures he had discovered. He discovered parrots, native people, palm trees, tobacco, cotton, fruits, spices, coconuts and more. He brought them all back with him to Europe the only issue with that was the biggest ship the Santa María on Christmas Eve of 1492 had sunk because Columbus had forgot to anchor both sides of the ship (he blamed it on the cabin boy). Columbus only had the two smaller ships the Niña and the Pinta left, so he couldn't bring the whole crew with him and had to make multiple trips. On his way back to Europe ships where in such bad shape that if they continued on any longer they'd probably sink. Luckily there was a group of islands where they could have there ship fixed, the only problem with that was they where owned by Portugal the king and queen of Spain who funded the trip's enemy. The Portuguese on the islands fixed Columbus's ships, but they said Columbus had to come meet with the king of Portugal before he was to return to England. The king of Portugal was trying to reach Asia as well and was furious when he found out Columbus had reached Asia (which turned out to be the Caribbean) because he had the opportunity to hire Columbus before the king and queen of England did. He agreed to let Columbus return to Spain, when Columbus did he was greeted haply by King Ferdinand and Queen Ysabella.
A group of people are trying to change the name of "Columbus Day " (which is usually occurs on the second Monday in October) from "Columbus Day " to "Indigenous People". People believe changing the name of "Columbus Day" is a good thing because Columbus on the journey lied several times to his crew about there location, chances to survive the journey and multiple other things I assume. I believe that we shouldn't change the name of"Columbus Day" because thou Columbus was a liar he had the courage to sail thousands of miles away from land into unknown territory. He did lie, but I believe due to the fear of the crew and mostly the fear of the captain of the Pinta that if he hadn't lied they never would've made it to what he thought was Asia but is really the Caribbean.
This is the link to the Concord Monitor article which argues we should change the name of "Columbus Day".
