Summary: (PARAGRAPH FORM, Who, What, Where, When, Why)
Right before Columbus and his crew left the Caribbean islands ( which they thought were the islands off of Asia) the Santa Maria sank, so they had to leave many of the crew behind. They sailed along until a big storm hit, which separated the Pinta from the Santa Maria. After the rest of the sail, the Columbus finally reached land, with his ship being badly battered. They reached Portugal, because they had to find somewhere closer because their ships were in such bad condition. A while after they arrived, the captain of the Pinta arrived and thought that he was the first of the three ships to arrive. When he found that Columbus and his crew had already made landfall, they felt a lot less triumphant.
Type your "thoughts" on the Columbus Day "change of name" idea. (Remember the Concord Monitor article? )
I think that changing the name to Columbus day is a great idea because personally I really don;t think that Columbus was a good enough perosn to have a day named after him
Concord Monitor article summary
There are some people that think that Columbus day is both offensive and wrong to have as a holiday. They have already changed this to indigenous peoples day in Durham NH, but the representative brought this to the house of representatives to fight for this to be changed in all of New Hampshire. These people think that a man as bad as Columbus was, should definitely not have an entire holiday to celebrate his “achievements” as an explorer. However, there are some people that think that making this change is offensive to them and their culture. But I think that this change is necessary because Columbus was a bad man who we gave the credit to for discovering America, even though he didn’t even reach the mainland.
