Mrs. Cahoon's Classroom

Weekly Update 10/22 - 10/26

Hello parents and students!

I'm sorry that my page hasn't been updated in weeks. Between technology issues and an overwhelming amount of grading, the website has fallen by the wayside. That's all changing this week! I'll be posting the upcoming homework assignments in the calendar below, along with any due dates for major assignments. I'm also putting up some resources for you to use in both Language Arts and Social Studies for the current units.

Recently in Language Arts we've been reading some dramas (plays) based on classical short stories like The Monkey's Paw and even one about Frankenstein. For the first drama students chose which story to read, and then worked with their choice to learn about the parts of plot and some literary elements like mood.

In the past few weeks of Social Studies we have been learning all about why history is important, and all of the aspects of history that we will need to be paying attention to as we delve into the ancient cultures of the world. Students took their first chapter assessment (test) on 10/17. Grades do not get put onto students' tests for the sole purpose of making each review their individual mistakes and misconceptions instead of just looking at a number on the front page. The scores for the test were posted in PowerSchool, and should a student wish to retake their assessment to improve their grade, they need to complete an Assessment Retake Form and meet with me to schedule a test date. I have copies of the Assessment Retake Form at school, but it will also be linked below the calendar on this page.

This Week in Mrs. Cahoon's Class!

In Language Arts we will be continuing our work with the drama adaptation of The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. This rendition comes to us courtesy of Scope Magazine and is an ominously suspenseful play that the students enjoyed reading last week. This week we will be looking into what elements of the play make it so suspenseful as well as taking a look at the different literary elements of the play. For a fun compare and contrast we will be watching an animated version of the story so that students can get a feel for the story separate from their own speaking and reading styles.

In Social Studies students will be starting Chapter 2: The Stone Age and Early Cultures. We are starting with prehistory - the period of time before writing was invented. We will be starting section 1 on Monday, and will tentatively have the section 1 quiz on that Friday. Students brought home their chapter 2 newsletters today that contain all of the big ideas of the chapter, tentative due dates, and the chapter vocabulary.

PowerSchool

To the left is the link for powerschool, or the portal that teachers at Nute use to record class grades and assignments? Curious about your student's grade? Check it out! You log in information went home during the first days of school.

Google Classroom

Your student will be using Google Classroom as one method of interacting with their school work and with assessments. Assignments are occasionally posted in one of my Google Classrooms, which may contain helpful links or copies of worksheets that students need to complete. All G.C. work is digital and can be submitted online without printing. These grades will be recorded in PowerSchool though. Your student can access their Classroom pages by logging into their gmail accounts and clicking on the icon to the left.
