Reading

Our fourth grade reading curriculum uses a workshop model, which means that we start each lesson with a 10 minute mini-lesson. Then the students have time to practice the skill that we learned about while they read their own just-right books. At the end of our reading time, we share what we have learned as it relates to the overarching theme.

In reading we have various different units that we study throughout the year. We follow the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, but also include some other aspects from the Oakland MI Units of Study and the EngageNY Literacy units.

Here are the units that we study:

- Launching Reader's Workshop

- Characterization in fiction

- Book group study (with focus on characterization)

- Informational texts and research (with focus on extreme weather)

- Reading history (with a focus on the American Revolution)

- Historical fiction book groups (with a focus on World War Two)

- Social Issues book groups
