Without the Foundation of Education course (Formally Early Childhood Education or Child Care Occupations) being a part of the high school curriculum, the Small Wonders Preschool would not exist. The preschool opened in December of 1976 as "Spaulding Preschool". In 1980 the name changed to "Ten Little Indians Preschool". From the start, the preschool was designed as laboratory or learning school for the students in the Foundation of Education program. Students are in the preschool classroom for about 85 minutes each day all year long. If they successfully complete the first year, and are still interested in pursuing a career dealing with the care and education of children, they can take Foundation of Education 2, which is also a yearlong course for a full block each day.

During the 2014-2015 school year the high school course had a name change from Early Childhood Education to Foundations of Education. The school is shifting its focus of education from birth to third grade to all facets of teaching. The state has also made changes in the competencies that guide our instruction to a multi age approach. This will have a small effect on Small Wonders. Students will still be supervising, planning lessons and providing quality care for children; in addition they will be heading out to field sites in the community to work with other age groups.

As we change and grow, we are trying to address the needs of the families in our community that we service. During the 2013-2014 school year we asked our current families for feedback through an interest survey. The results of the survey came back and many people are looking for more “preschool” experience for their three and four year olds. To address this need we will be making some changes to the preschool classes we offer.

Since 2014, we have integrated the paperwork for Small Wonder so that is will be entered into the SAU 54 (Rochester School Department) Infinite Campus, online data and grading system used by the Rochester School District. This information will follow your child through their time here in the district. If your child stays within the district for Kindergarten you will not need to fill out another registration packet. You will receive a validation letter confirming your child’s information. This will save time and insure an easy transition to kindergarten for our families.
