Welcome to the Deerfield Community School Library

The DCS Library contains more than 13,000 books, audiobooks, DVDs and ebooks for student and staff use. The library also houses equipment such as Chromebooks, e-readers, mp3 players and Internet Hotspots which can be checked out to complete schoolwork at home.

The library program consists of goals focusing primarily on three areas:

  • Location and access of information

  • Development of literacy knowledge and skills

  • Development of skills to evaluate the quality of information from a variety of sources.

Lessons in location and access of information include learning to locate books in the library and use the library’s online catalog. Students learn keyword searching skills and how to locate materials using the Dewey Decimal System. Lessons in literacy knowledge and skills include reading and discussing different types of stories. Our discussions focus on ELA standards such as character, point of view, theme and summarizing. Lessons in evaluating the quality of information, for older students, include analyzing the currency, authority, and bias of online sources.

K-8 students can check out 2 books each week from the library. The loan period for books is 1 week for Grades K-5 and two weeks for Grades 6-8.
