Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
Do I need to purchase a dictionary for my child?
The students do not need to purchase a dictionary. There are
dictionaries available in class and in the school library. At
times students don't find the correct word when using a
dictionary and the results are often comical.
gafas= eye glasses vaso= glass for drinking
Should students be using on-line translators?
A student could use an on-line translator to find a word or two
but not to translate sentences. At times students try to type in
English and have the computer translate the whole writing. This
is not a good plan as it is not the student's work and it often
includes vocabulary and grammar well beyond the current level of
study.
How can I help my child study? I don't know Spanish.
Students will always have flashcards which the parents can help
with. Show the English word and have your child say the Spanish
word. Feeling adventurous? Try saying the Spanish word. Your
child will love correcting any mispronunciation.
When will my child be fluent?
Although we make great progress in the Spanish program, two
classes a week will not achieve that goal. Students are
encouraged to continue the study of Spanish in High School and
College.
How come I never hear my child speaking Spanish?
Unless there is another Spanish speaker at home it is unlikely
that your child will have a conversation with themselves. This
is a hard one as parents you want to see evidence of their
learning. Parents are welcome to come see a class and there will
also be opportunities to hear and see your child present or role-
play a situation in Spanish. There are many opportunities to use
Spanish in real life settings in restaurants and stores even in
our area.
