Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year.
These year will mark my 31st year teaching. I began teaching high school Spanish. I taught at two different high schools before coming to GCS. Although I enjoyed my years as a high school teacher, I love teaching the younger students. The enthusiasm they bring to the classroom is contagious. I have taught Spanish at GCS to 2nd-8th graders, currently, I am teaching grades 6th-8th.
I continue to look for ways to experience and learn about Hispanic cultures and challenge myself as a Spanish teacher. Within the past five years I have chaperoned three trips to Costa Rica, and one to Peru with PHS, as well as taking family trips to the Dominican Republic and Spain. I have also hosted an exchange student from Spain for a year as well as teaching English to Spanish exchange students. I also spent two weeks this summer taking a course in Costa Rica and living with a Costa Rican family.
A little about my personal life. I live here in Greenland with my husband, Bob and one of our daughter. Our oldest two boys have finished college and have joined the workforce and our daughter is attending UNH. Between high school and college she took a gap year which included four weeks in Peru, four weeks in Guatemala and four weeks in Costa Rica as well as a month long trip to Southeast Asia where she visited Bali, Indonesia, Phuket, Thailand and Siem Reap, Cambodia. When she returned home she was able to present to eighth grade students about her trip to the Spanish speaking countries.
I do hope to use my experiences as well as my families experiences to highlight the importance of knowing another language and the advantage of knowing Spanish regardless of the career.
The Spanish program has developed and changed since it was introduced at GCS
in 1997. The program began with classes taught only to the Seventh and some
Eighth graders. The program had grown to include an elementary component
starting this year with the kindergarteners and continuing through Eighth grade.
Students in all grades will be learning the Spanish language as well as gaining an knowledge of some cultural topics.. After successfully completing the classes in the program, GCS students typically go on to the second or third class in the sequence of Spanish classes at PHS and other area private high schools. We continue to evaluate and assess the program yearly to best meet the needs of our students.
