COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This college level course involves the reading and interpretation of representative texts in a variety of genres. The AP English Language curriculum balances fiction and non-fiction helping students deepen their understanding and awareness of how language works by focusing on three skills: analysis (with a focus on rhetoric), argument, and synthesis. Students focus on nonfiction (essays, biographies, autobiographies, speeches, newspaper and magazine articles) as well as texts by a number of classic American authors. Students will consider the visual media that surrounds them whether spoken, displayed, or broadcasted. Students will write timed essays in class as well as completion of essays requiring multiple drafts, revision conferencing and final proofreading. This course is recommended for students who have an appreciation for language, have demonstrated they can read with considerable understanding and insight, and can write correctly, effectively, and gracefully. Students electing this AP course should expect longer daily reading assignments as well as frequent, challenging writing assignments. Students will be required to complete an extensive and demanding assignment during the
Summer. Note: Successful completion of the AP English Language exam may entitle the student to receive college credit, depending on the policy of the college and the test score. Students are expected to take the AP English Language exam at the end of this course for a fee of approximately $100, payable to the College Board. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify for SAT waivers.
