One of the best ways to help your child have a successful start is by encouraging independence and practicing everyday routines at home.
Use the bathroom independently, including washing hands.
Put on and take off coats, hats, and backpacks.
Open lunch containers, snack packages, and water bottles.
Use tissues and cover coughs and sneezes.
Clean up toys and materials after play.
You can support independence by encouraging your child to:
Carry and pack and unpack their own backpack.
Make simple choices and solve small problems independently.
Ask for help when needed.
Complete simple tasks and chores at home.
Practice separating from parents and spending time with trusted adults.
Listening and following directions are important skills that help children learn and participate successfully in the classroom. You can practice by:
Giving simple two to three step directions such as, “Put your shoes away, wash your hands, and come to the kitchen.”
Encouraging your child to listen when others are speaking.
Playing games that involve taking turns and following rules.
Establishing routines and expectations at home.
Helping your child practice waiting patiently and transitioning between activities.
Every child develops at their own pace. The goal is not perfection, but building confidence and independence. With practice, encouragement, and a positive attitude, your child will be well prepared for a wonderful kindergarten experience. We look forward to partnering with you to make this a successful and joyful year!
