*Students are NOT permitted to transport medication to and from school*
Life saving medications such as EpiPen's and Inhalers are the ONLY exception to this rule
EpiPens
If your child has a history of anaphylaxis or has been diagnosed with a severe allergy you must provide an Allergy Action Plan each school year, signed and dated by their medical provider. You must also provide the medications listed on said action plan, typically an antihistamine and a form of Epinephrine to keep on hand in the nurse's office.
Inhalers
If your student requires an inhaler to manage asthma symptoms you must provide an Asthma Action Plan each school year, signed and dated by their medical provider. You must also provide an inhaler and spacer if necessary to keep on hand in the nurse's office.
OTC's
Per the New Hampshire Board of Nursing, school nurse's are authorized to administer Over-The-Counter medications per the labels instructions to students in school with written parental consent. This is done each school year via PowerSchool. You will be given a list of medication typically kept on hand in nurse's office's throughout the district and may select which ones you are comfortable with your student receiving at school.
At HPS I typically keep on hand:
generic, dye-free, liquid forms of ibuprofen and acetaminophen
sugar-free cough drops
generic caladryl clear anti-itch gel
If your child requires an Over-The-Counter medication more than 3 times a month, I typically request a doctor's order and for the parent to provide a supply of the medication for the student.
Prescription
If your child is prescribed a medication, please make every effort to administer it at home.
If medication must be given during school hours, the following are required:
A medication order signed and dated by a licensed provider (MD, NP, or PA). Please note: prescription labels and after-visit summaries do not meet this requirement.
The medication must be provided in its original pharmacy-labeled container.
If you have any questions or need clarification, please contact the nurse’s office directly.
