Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must earn 18 out of 20 points on the Application Evaluation Rubric (provided to the student with the Candidate Invitation and Application) in order to be accepted. A committee of 5 faculty members will then carefully read the completed forms, recommendations, and activity reports to select the new members. The information below may give you an idea of what the faculty council is looking for:

Academic Achievement (8 points) Academic Achievement is the hallmark of a National Elementary Honor Society member. Students must meet standards in all areas of study to qualify. Students who receive this invitation have already qualified for their academic achievement and thus have already earned 8 points on their application score.

Character (4 points) Character is the force that guides your attitude and actions. It involves demonstrating reliability, honesty, and self-control. The council will be looking for evidence that the applicant is trustworthy and is, in reality, what he/she wishes to appear to be to others. Two letters of reference are required that help illustrate your personal character.

Service & Leadership (2 points each) A potential candidate for the NEHS demonstrates the capacity for leadership and has served in key leadership positions as well as conducted service to their community or school.

Personal Statement (2 points) Applicants must include a personal statement (1 paragraph or more) explaining why he/she should be considered for the BES National Elementary Honor Society. Statements should include examples of character as well as how his/her membership would benefit the community and school.

Completed Application (2 points) Applicants must submit a completed application by the deadline (no late applications accepted) to be considered for the BES National Elementary Honor Society.
