Reading

The Pluto Reading Program

The Pluto reading program is all about encouraging children to read at home, and to select just right books. In the beginning of the year we will make rocket ships that will be docked on Planet Earth. From there, students will go to the Moon, then Mars, then the rest of the farther planets. For each planet they land on, students receive a reward. It takes 20 points to advance to the next planet, and students get 1 point for about 20 pages of a book that is just right for them. Any child can move through the planets regardless of their reading level. Each child will bring in the books read on his or her assigned day. We will have a conversation, I will assign points, and keep track of books read. Many reluctant readers have evolved into avid readers because of this activity.

Miracles on Maple Hill

All of the links below will take you to sites with videos about making maple syrup. The pages also include other information that will be helpful if you want to try this at home. Sugar maples are the best to tap because the sap contains more sugar. You can tap other kinds of maples if you don't have sugar maples, but you will need to collect more sap to make a gallon of syrup than you would if you tapped a sugar maple.
