What is a Vision of a Learner?
Many schools undertake a process to clarify their hopes, aspirations, and goals for students. This has commonly been done through the development of a “Portrait of a Graduate,” a statement that focuses attention on how high schools prepare students for post-secondary success. In recent years, school districts around the country have embraced the development of a broader, more comprehensive statement that focuses on the PreK-12 learning experience for all students. A Vision of a Learner helps a community recognize that we are not just preparing for graduation but fostering deep learning experiences every day! How does will this make a difference?
A Vision of a Learner is created with input from all stakeholders, including community members, students, families/caregivers and educators. Once complete, the Vision is a true representation of the community, creating a “North Star” for a district to utilize for all aspects of educational planning. It can influence strategic plans, professional development, curriculum, and lesson planning. Once complete, we will be able to intentionally align all that we do each day to our Vision.
What process was used to gather perspectives of stakeholders so that it is truly representative of multiple points of view?
We sought the input of many constituents in the development of this vision, gathering input from hundreds of people. Interview results were analyzed for themes and categories, and the information was then processed by a District Visioning Task Force to ensure that we captured, in the most thorough manner, the diverse perspectives of stakeholders. For more information on the data and research used to create the Vision, check out the Data Page on the site.
How can I be involved?
The creation of the Vision of a Learner is only the beginning! We will be moving toward the development of a district mission statement and strategic plan. Each school will be using the Vision to guide all aspects of their work. We will be seeking the contributions of stakeholders along the way.
