Are ELOs for all students?
YES! Students at all academic levels should look at ELOs as a part of their high school journey. Some ELO types are not open to underclassmen as these require a modified schedule, something not done until the Junior or Senior year to ensure students stay on track to meet graduation requirements.
Are ELOs a quick and easy way to earn credit?
Nope! These do not exist to replace the courses at MHS, simply add to them on an individual basis. ELO's are always monitored by at least one certified teacher and, in some cases, more than one.
Can ELOs be used for Core Classes?
No. You must complete the core requirements to graduate from MHS. ELOs can be used to satisfy any elective credit needed for MHS graduation.
Can I complete multiple ELOs?
YES! There is no set maximum number of ELOs a student can complete. While it is recommended that students only do one ELO at a time, it is possible to do sequential ELOs. The difference is that your Learning Goals will need to be different and offer more specific focus in latter ELOs. Example: You complete an Advanced Study ELO for performing a play at a theater and want to complete another ELO. Your second ELO could not be on the same things you learned in the first ELO. Instead, you could choose to do new learning goals that focus on lighting, costuming, or set construction. ELOs must show new learning, but they can be highly individualized!
Who grades my ELO?
It depends on the type of ELO. For the most part, the ELO Director will complete the grade and provide it to the School Counselors for entry onto your official transcript. If there is ever a question over a grade for an ELO, the ELO Director makes the final decision. In situations where a student or parent does not agree with the ELO Director, the MHS Principal will hear any appeals.
Can Parents come to the meetings to set up my ELO?
Yes! Not only that, if this is your first ELO, it is encouraged. The ELO Director is at MHS until 6:00 PM for most of the school year, so evening meetings are very possible. If not in person, we can certainly arrange a Zoom meeting if that is easier.
