How do I participate?
Start by reading for 20 minutes. For every 20 minutes you read, color in one block on the map. At the end of five blocks, you have earned a raffle ticket. The more you read, the more tickets you earn! Keep reading until the summer is done and see how far you can get!
The first week of school, return your reading map to Mrs. Mechachonis. You will receive a prize for bringing it back. You will also get the tickets you earned to enter into a raffle for additional prizes.
How can adults help?
There’s a lot that can happen during the summer, but making time each week to set aside time to read can make a big difference. An adult can help you schedule time to read each week. This will help make reading part of a routine and can improve reading stamina, focus, and comprehension.
At the end of the summer, be sure to have your adult at home sign your reading map and make sure all the information needed (your name, grade, and teacher for the fall) is included on this paper. Pack it in your bag and return it the first week of school.
What counts as reading?
Reading by yourself
Reading with a friend
Having someone read to you
Listening to an audiobook or a Playaway
Why should I read 20 minutes a day?
Reading for 20 minutes a day has several powerful benefits, especially for students. Here are a few key reasons:
Boosts Vocabulary and Language Skills: Daily reading exposes you to new words, phrases, and sentence structures, which naturally builds a stronger vocabulary and improves writing and speaking skills.
Improves Focus and Concentration: Regular reading helps train your brain to focus for longer periods, which can also help with studying, test-taking, and other academic tasks.
Adds Up Over Time: Just 20 minutes a day adds up to over 120 hours a year. That’s a huge amount of reading that can help you finish books, stay ahead in school, and develop a lifelong habit of learning.
