The North Hampton School is a “FLES” (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) type program that prioritizes the development of proficiency in the language, as opposed to exposure to the language.
Approximately 90% of NHS students in grades 4-8 currently take Spanish.
NHS students begin learning Spanish when they are young and most capable of developing their oral language skills.
All four modes of communication are emphasized: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
4th and 5th graders have Spanish class twice a week for 45 minutes per class. 6th-8th graders have have Spanish class three times a week for 45 minutes per class.
NHS follows the basic scope and sequence of McDougal Littell's “En español program”.
The content covered in NHS Spanish is similar to what students learn in a typical high school Spanish level one program.
Many of the world language skills that students learn here can be applied to the acquisition of additional languages.
Classes often feature music, movement, videos and games. A variety of technology is used to appeal to different learning styles and make instruction more effective.
We prefer to assess students on what they can do with their Spanish skills as opposed to the grammar and vocabulary they know.
We use a variety of formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress.
All NHS graduates qualify for Spanish 2 at Winnacunnet High School provided that they maintain a 3 (meeting expectations) average in 8th grade.
NHS graduates are generally very successful in their high school world language programs.
