SAU 20 COVID-19 Updates

“Tough times never last, but tough people do.”

5/18/21

Good Afternoon Androscoggin Valley Parents of 12-18 year olds,

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is now available for everyone ages 12 and older. In the clinical trial for children ages 12 through 15, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 100% effective at preventing COVID-19 with symptoms. In addition, children’s immune systems responded to the vaccine in a way similar to those of older teens and young adults. No safety concerns were identified in the clinical trial.

Every family is going to make their best decision whether they plan to vaccinate their children or not but we want to make sure you know how to get the vaccine if this is your choice.

There will be 3 clinics at the Brown School setup specifically for the 12-18 year old population. They will take place on Friday, May 21, from 8:00 - 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 25 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, and Friday, May 28, from 8:00 - 10:00 am. There are other opportunities to receive the vaccine but these clinics are focused on the student population. If none of these dates work for you check the site for other options or contact CCFHS or AVH directly.

To sign up for a clinic all you need to do is visit vaccines.nh.gov and create an account for each child (you will need a different email address for each child). Once you have set up an account they will send you an email and you will be able to set up an appointment for your vaccination. The Brown School Clinic is listed on the site as Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the vaccination there will be a valley-wide Zoom call with Dr. Beals on Monday, May 24, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm where we will explain the process and answer any questions you may have.

To Join the Zoom Meeting go to:

Subject: Clarification of the Mask Policy

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Since Governor Sununu announced the repeal of the statewide mask mandate we have been asked about how it will impact our schools. Our policies were put in place prior to the statewide mask mandate and were developed using guidance from the CDC and NH DHHS. The CDC and NH DHHS guidance has not changed hence we plan to continue with our current policies. We understand the strain everyone has been under this year and we would all like to be on the other side of this event. In order to get there it is going to require us all of us to remain strong to the end. Thank you for supporting our staff, students and community.

4/14/21

Dear GRS and MVS Communities:

To address the recent Governor's order that all students will have the option to return to 5 days a week in-person instruction, we have devised the following plan.

  • April 23 will be a day off for students while the staff takes the day to plan and prepare for a return to 5-day, in-person instruction.

  • Schools will have enough instructional hours at the end of the year, so students will not need to make up this day, and the last day of school will remain the same.

  • Beginning the week of May 3, instruction will be in person, five days a week.

This plan was approved by the Milan and GRS Cooperative School Boards.

Good Afternoon:

The numbers of fully vaccinated people in our communities continue to rise, and restrictions are starting to loosen. These changes have allowed us to reevaluate the use of a remote day in our schools. At this time, we are planning to return to a five-day, in-person schedule beginning the week of May 10. We feel that this gives us enough time to prepare for the additional tasks while recognizing how important it is for students to be in school as much as possible.

Planning for remote students’ support in a five-day schedule will be the most challenging component of this process. We understand that there is a genuine medical need to be out of school for some of our students. However, if you are in remote learning and have started thinking about returning to in-person, now is an excellent time for you to reach out to your school and discuss this transition’s details.

We continue to be committed to being in-person as much as possible, knowing the additional effort this requires from everyone. Throughout this event, we have seen the benefits of students being in a structured environment. Thank you for all the support, understanding, and grace throughout this year. None of this has been easy, but thanks to everyone’s efforts, we have grown through this adversity.

Sincerely,

David Backler, Superintendent

On Friday, March 26, we were informed of a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the Edward Fenn School. Mrs. Binette and her team worked with NH DHHS and went through all of the contact tracing protocol. The process was completed on Friday evening. All of the students and staff who were in close contact following the new DHHS guidelines will be in quarantine and participating in remote instruction. All classes will remain in-person. Everyone who was contacted in this process was amazing in their support and willingness to cooperate. We have a truly amazing community and we will get through this together.

3/23/21

As I am sure most of you are aware the NH DHHS put out new guidance for schools. We have reviewed this new information and like all of their previous guidelines we will adopt this in our schools.

If you would like the details please click on this link for the official alert.

The major change for our schools is domestic travel within the U.S. no longer requires quarantine upon return to NH (regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status), this includes domestic travel to U.S. territories.

Please also note that all SAU 20 schools will return directly to in-person instruction following April vacation.

3/19/21

I love being a dad to my three boys. Over this past year, I’ve tried to be present for them and to support their unique needs and interests through the uncertainty and challenges brought on by the pandemic. What I’ve seen clearly is that, although they are each very different, they share the need for the structure, consistency, and social connections provided by school.

In my role as Superintendent, I see this need shared by children of all ages throughout our district. Our staff sees it too. It is why we have worked so hard to turn our small school size to our advantage and to maintain in-person classes as much as possible since September.

As state guidelines evolved through 2020 and the numbers of people in Coos infected with COVID began to rise, we had to remain flexible. We listened to the guidance of the state’s epidemiologists and consulted daily with our local health care professionals. The more we learned, the more we understood that the virus was not being transmitted in schools. We followed their guidance in reworking our policies, moving away from our very conservative early interpretations of public health guidelines to a more nuanced and strategic approach to education in the pandemic.

Ongoing conversations with staff also revealed the incredible strain that they were under, teaching some students in person while others were remote. Our staff has undertaken impossible tasks this year, adapting curriculum, maintaining vigilance on public health requirements, conducting rapid contact tracing, and showing up for kids with grit, compassion, and humor.

We knew any model for our schools had to prioritize educators’ health and wellbeing too.

We are still learning, but so far the hybrid model we have been using since November seems to be working. Flex Fridays offer students the opportunity to seek additional help while providing teachers critical planning time. We also opted to remain in remote instruction for a week after Winter and February Break predicting a rise in cases resulting from family gatherings and knowing from experience that if too many students and staff were in quarantine, we simply could not sustain in-person instruction.

We know that these measures presented challenges for many. Without question, working parents and caregivers have been impacted by them. Our hope is that by knowing the remote schedule in advance, families can have ample time to plan for childcare coverage. We also believe strongly that these compromises are allowing us to maintain in-person instruction four out of five days each week. It goes without saying that this is not the case for the vast majority of schools across the state and nation.

At this point in the school year, we are seeing the payoff of all of these efforts. We now have data on our student’s academic progress to add to our daily observations and interactions with them. The data shows that our students are quickly making up ground that was lost during last year’s remote instruction. More importantly, all indications are that access to their peers and our staff is helping students maintain emotional stability through these difficult times.

There is always room for improvement and our staff continues to look for new ways to serve our students and to support one another. We constantly monitor new guidance and will make adjustments as we see safe, new ways forward. As warmer weather arrives and the percentage of people in our communities getting vaccinated rises, we are beginning to imagine a time beyond life in the grips of COVID-19. What is undeniable is that we are finding our way through the complex and harrowing challenges of this pandemic together. We have all made sacrifices along the way, but I do believe we will be stronger having come through this period together.

This message is to inform you that in previous meetings both the Milan School Board and the GRS Cooperative School Board decided to extend Remote Fridays for the duration of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The schools have found that having a remote day on Friday has allowed them to address the many additional components if education during COVID. We truly understand the additional strain this puts on families but we feel it gives our schools a better chance to remain in-person for the remainder of the school year.

Both boards also chose to have a remote week following February Break. We would rather make this decision now so that you all have tome to plan rather than being forced to make it days before we return from break.

1/7/2021

On Monday, January 11, the Milan Village School, the Edward Fenn Elementary School and the Gorham Middle & High School will return to In-Person instruction as planned. In-Person instruction will continue at the Errol Consolidated School. We have a truly amazing community and we will get through this together.

12/9/20

Dear MVS Community:

At their meeting on December 8, the Milan School Board made a motion to shorten the remote instruction period after Christmas Break from two weeks to one week. This change follows the Governor's new order that will allow people who travel outside New England to quarantine for seven days, test for COVID on day five and return to school or work as long as their results are negative.

12/8/2020

Dear GRS Community:

As you may have already heard we have had a presumed positive case of COVID at the Edward Fenn. I need to reiterate that this is a presumed case not a confirmed case. We will not know whether the student is positive for a few days but we wanted to act with ample caution to ensure the safety of all. We have been in touch with all families who have students who were in close contact with the student. At this time one of the kindergarten classes will be remote with the intention of returning to in-school instruction after a 10 day quarantine.

12/3/2020

Dear Errol Community:

The school board met on 12/3/20 and based on the current downward trend of active COVID cases and a strong plan in the school we will be returning to in-person instruction on Monday, December 7. The school will be in touch soon with details.

12/1/2020

Dear Milan Village School Community:

Milan Village School was informed today that there has been a positive case of COVID. The exposure happened yesterday, Monday, November 30.

All staff and students who were identified as a close contact have been notified by office staff. They will quarantine for 14 days and learn Remotely.

The school areas and bus in contact are being disinfected and sanitized. Please contact Amy Huter, the school Principal, with any questions.

11/24/20

Dear Errol Community:

At the Errol School Board meeting last night it was decided that due to the current numbers of COVID infections in Colebrook we would not be able to reopen on November 30. Our current plan is to watch the numbers in Colebrook which are currently slowly declining. If the numbers stabilize between now and December 3, we would reopen school on Monday, December 7. We will send out information on the 3rd to let you all know one way or the other. This was a difficult decision as we all want to have students return to school as soon as they safely can. We are hopeful that a safer return to school will happen on December 7.

11/18/20

Dear GRS Community:

At their meeting on November 17, the GRS Cooperative School Board made a motion to shorten the remote instruction period after Christmas Break from two weeks to one week. This change follows the Governor's new order that will allow people who travel outside New England to quarantine for seven days, test for COVID on day five and return to school or work as long as their results are negative.

11/12/20

Dear SAU 20 Community:

First, I want to begin by thanking our staff, parents and students for your extraordinary adaptability and perseverance over these past two weeks. As you know, our primary goal right now is to get students back to school, provided we can do so safely.

After careful study of the updated New Hampshire Department of Education’s regulations and working in close partnership with local medical professionals, neighboring school district officials and state experts, we have found a responsible path forward.

We are adopting a more refined algorithm to guide our decisions and to prompt moves between the green, yellow and red phases of school re-opening. Our intent is for students to be in school when local infection rates allow for that to happen.

We have crafted a plan for each school in our district based on current local infection rate data. To track these infection rates, we are in daily communication with local medical professionals, and we are working closely with them to trace cases to their sources. For this reason, we are well positioned to observe changes in infection trendlines and will work to promptly communicate these changes and their impact on schools to all of you.

Our team is relieved to see that current infection rates in the Androscoggin Valley are leveling off thanks to our collective efforts to stay safe. The basic steps of social distancing, mask-wearing, hand washing, and staying home when you are sick make a tremendous and positive difference in limiting virus transmission.

Our re-opening plans for SAU20 schools are as follows:

Errol:

Due to the coronavirus outbreak in Colebrook, the Errol Consolidated School will follow the Colebrook plan and stay in remote instruction until at least November 30. We will continue to monitor local infection rate data to guide decisions beyond that time.

Milan:

At this time, we plan to move the Milan Village School back to in-person instruction beginning on Monday, November 16. We will continue to follow the infection rate numbers closely, but we currently feel that our local medical professionals have a good handle on the active cases and the current risk to schools is low. If you would like to keep your child in a remote environment, please contact your school directly.

GRS:

At this time, we plan to move both Edward Fenn and GMHS back to in-person instruction beginning on Monday, November 16. We will continue to follow the virus numbers closely, but we currently feel that our local medical professionals have a good handle on the active cases and the current risk to schools is low. If you would like to keep your child in a remote environment, please contact your school directly.

2020 continues to be one of the most challenging years of our lives. All of these decisions have been incredibly difficult because we know that they have an enormous impact on all of you. We are working hard to learn and adapt so that we can provide high quality education to our students in a safe and nurturing environment.

If you have any questions, please feel welcome to contact me directly.

10/30/20

Dear SAU 20 Community:

Due to rapidly rising community transmission levels, All SAU 20 Schools will remain in remote instruction for two weeks. Reevaluation of reopening will occur on or before November 12.

Over the next several days, you will receive more detailed information regarding remote instruction, meals, and other specifics from your child’s school. Please be sure to check the SAU and your school’s websites for up to date information. Please also check your town’s website for new information regarding this quickly changing situation.

Despite our many precautions, we knew that shifting to “Yellow” was a possibility this year. We have been preparing for this situation for months. Our staff is ready. Teachers have been preparing their students for this situation since the first day of school. That said, this has been an incredibly tough decision for all of us as we deeply understand its impact on our community and students. We need to work together to slow down the spread of the coronavirus in our region. If we all follow the CDC guidelines, we will have a better chance of slowing the infection rate and getting our students back into school soon and safely.

8/19/20

Parents, please review the plan and determine which model of instruction will be best for your child(ren). Once you have made a decision please inform the school by filling out this form. The responses are due by Friday. The information is crucial in developing the next phase of the plan and ensuring we will have the resource required to meet the needs of every student.

Errol Consolidated School

We are happy to announce that on 8/17/20 the Errol Board made a motion to approve the Reopening Plan. Thanks to the tireless work of many dedicated community members we have a plan that will safely meet the needs of all our families and support the growth of every student.

Parents should review the plan and determine which model of instruction will be best for their child(ren). A staff person from the Errol School will be in contact with you in order to collect your information.

10/29/20

After consulting with our medical experts and reviewing the current spread of COVID in our community the decision was made that all SAU 20 schools will be in the “Yellow Phase”(Remote for all students) tomorrow, Friday, October 30.

Based on information gathered tomorrow a determination will be made by the end of the day regarding the mode of instruction for next week.

Please understand that this decision was something we all struggled with as we know students thrive when they are in school. Our goal is to get the community spread under control and get back into schools as soon as we safely can.

Please be sure to check the SAU’s and your school’s website for up to date information.

10/22/20

Greetings GRS and MVS Communities:

Let me begin by sharing my gratitude and admiration for the effort and dedication our community, including our students, staff, and all of you, have put forth as we chart a new course in these difficult times.

I am writing to let you know about two important changes we are making to our schools’ schedules as we apply what we have learned to improve our approach in the near term. These are decisions that we take very seriously. We have put considerable effort into looking at all options because we know these changes will have a real impact on our community. We believe the changes are necessary to provide the best education for our students while recognizing the strain we are putting on our staff under our current structure.

The first change is that we will be moving to remote instruction on Fridays beginning on November 6. This remote day will allow teachers to have virtual office hours, check-in directly with students, align remote and in-person lessons and ensure all students receive the instruction support needed to thrive. We know that this change will not be easy for most parents to accommodate, but we believe it is necessary for the short-term. We will reassess this approach for the second semester.

The other change will be to go to remote-only instruction for the two weeks following the Holiday (Christmas) Break. We are currently under state orders that if anyone travels outside of the New England region, they will need to quarantine for two weeks upon their return. We know that many in our community haven’t seen family for a long time and might be tempted to do so over the break. By going remote, we are being proactive and allowing everyone ample time to make plans for this time out of school. We will be in remote instruction from January 4-January 15, and return to in-school instruction on Tuesday, January 18 following MLK Day on Monday, January 17.

We hope you will understand that we made these changes to allow our education system to function effectively over the entirety of this unprecedented school year. We are all in this together, through the good and the bad. As I have said in the past, I know we can do it if we all work together.

Yours in Education,

David Backler, Superintendent

Dear SAU 20 Community,

As of August 18, all of the school boards in SAU 20 have approved the Reopening Plan. The plan took many stakeholders and long hours to develop, but in the end, we feel that we have addressed the needs of our community in a safe and learner-focused way. School starts on September 8 in Gorham, Randolph, and Shelburne as well as in Errol and August 9, at the Milan Village School. All students will have an onsite, 5 days a week option or the ability to stay remote.

The plan follows guidelines set out by the CDC, AAP, NH DHHS, and the NHDOE. Our school nurses have played a critical role as our building level medical experts. We have also had the support of many local medical professionals, including Dr. Beals, who was kind enough to be our medical expert, Brian O’Hearn, Michael Peterson, and Kimberly Caron from AVH and many others who have helped along the way. The medical advice received from this group was critical in developing a plan that is scientifically based.

There are 3 phases in the plan. The first or Green Phase will be in place as long as the COVID-19 numbers stay low, there aren’t any cases in school, and the Governor’s orders allow. During this phase, parents can either send their children to school in person to follow the specific guidelines outlined in the plan or opt for a remote learning environment. Remote students will follow along with the in-school lessons, while daily instruction takes place digitally. During the second or Yellow Phase, all students will be in a remote learning environment for a short period while we evaluate the given situation. If we determine that we need to stay in a remote setting for an extended period, we will move into the final or Red Phase. In the Red Phase, remote instruction will continue, and lessons will be designed specifically for out of school learning.

Any family not sure which model to choose should contact their school for more information. A survey was sent to all families to collect information if you haven’t received the survey, you will find it on the COVID-19 Updates tab at the top of all the schools’ websites. This link is also where you can find the details of the Reopening Plan and all current updates.

As this plan started taking shape, stakeholders met together remotely and in-person, ensuring everyone who wanted to participate could. Bringing all these groups together was a tremendous amount of work for the building-level administrators, but the result is a document that meets all families’ needs. We want to thank everyone who participated by filling out a survey, joining a remote meeting, serving on a committee or board. The work that everyone was able to accomplish together was inspiring.

I have always known that we are a strong community, and this event has proven it repeatedly. The effort people have spent making sure that everyone has what they need from food to masks is inspiring. I am glad to raise my children here, proud to be a part of this place and confident that we will get through this more resilient than before.

Sincerely,

David Backler, Superintendent, SAU 20

SAU 20 Reopening Planning Timeline Fall 2020

I know from the many calls and emails I have been receiving that everyone would like to know what our schools are planning for a safe reopening this fall and rightly so. As a parent I have concerns and want to make sure that our schools are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of all students and staff. Our administrators have been working since the spring to make sure we will be ready for the challenges ahead. That said, due to the rapidly changing landscape we know that finalizing plans prematurely will lead to sharing out misinformation that will need to be retracted and changed. We do know that we will be working within phases based on the current medical environment in our local area (detail of the phases).

The following is a timeline that will allow you to know when you can expect certain information:

July 27-31

  • Surveys will be sent out to staff and families regarding concerns and preferences

  • Basic plan overviews will be shared with school boards and then made public on our websites

  • School committees will be formed to review plans

  • Administrator Team will meet to review the state, federal and local recommendations

August 3-7

  • School level teams will meet, review plans and determine recommendations

  • Zoom information sharing videos with the public and staff on updates

August 10-18

  • Plans will go before school boards for approval

  • Once approved plans will be made public on school’s websites

August 31- September 4

  • All staff will have training regarding the new plan and be prepared for safely opening schools

September 8

  • Tentative first day of school (based on school board approval)

I hope that this information is helpful. I know that in these uncertain times the more information you all have the better. I also hope that you all understand that we want to make sure that what we are sharing is accurate and current.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
