“Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is the comprehensive body of skills, research, and knowledge that helps people make informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.” aafcs.org

"FCS" or Family and Consumer Sciences used to be called "Home Economics." Ring any bells? In the US, the name was changed back in the 90s (even though a lot of schools still called it "Home Ec" for quite some time afterward). The name change was an attempt to reflect the modernization that the subject area had gone through and continues to go through. It's not just about baking and sewing anymore. In fact, FCS is an extremely broad subject area that can encompass anything that would be considered a "life skill;" or something that is useful and important in everyday life.
