Digging Into Diversity

All people have beautiful colorful skin covering their bodies. To really know someone, you can’t just see their skin. You can take a journey inside to discover all the other wonderful things about a person. Maybe you have a lot in common with a new friend!

Sometimes when we see things that are different about new friends, like their skin color, we might think it is weird or strange because we are not used to it. It is important for us to remember that being different from friends doesn’t mean weird – just different, and different isn’t bad.”

First watch the Elmo video then choose one or both of the read-alouds below. Then complete the activity on Seesaw. For even more fun, there are some OPTIONAL extension activities to explore at the bottom of the webpage as well.

Diversity is all the differences that make every person unique. Watch this awesome video to explore diversity with Elmo. That will help you put todays read-aloud in context, so you can understand it even better.

Special Guest Reader

Hey! I’m Dilan Cordoba, a student at Phillips Exeter Academy. I currently reside in Long Island, New York City. I was born in Colombia, South America, and moved to the United States in 2011 as a 7-year-old kid. As you might have probably figured out my native language is Spanish and my culture at home is very different than others. In other words, I’m different. I’m different from what you regularly see and hear. I have a different story and journey than others. I’m different, I’m unique and that’s valuable. This is exactly why I’m reading you guys these books. These books represent me and who I am in some way and I want to let you guys into my part of the world and who I am. But more importantly, I do this because I want you guys to see that being different is a good thing and that the Golden rule(treat others how you want to be treated) is always a rule even when older. I hope you enjoy these readings as much as I do.

Another way for kids to think about justice would be to think about it as what can be fair for the character.

Print out the "All About Me" cIrcle and draw or wrtite ansers for each section. Ask someone in your family to do one too. Now compare your answers. Are they all the same? Are some the same and some different?

Print out the PDF on the left and follow the directions. If you want you can compare your answers with your classmates, and maybe compare them with your family and even your neighbors.

OPTIONAL Family Discussion Questions

DIVERSITY exercise: Rewind the book and hold your skin up next to the people in the book. How is your beautiful skin similar and different from theirs. Then hold your skin up against the skin of a family member. How is your skin similar or different?

IDENTITY thinking: What would people discover if they were able to explore your mind and your heart? Would they find out that you love math, or are a great artist? That you love puppies or helping your grandma make kimchi? Maybe you like watching rugby or telling folk tales?

JUSTICE thinking prompt: Do you think you can really know someone by just looking at them and without you talking to them?

ACTION Writing/Reflection prompt: Think of a friend who has skin different from you. What do you think you might discover about them if you talked to them to find out what is on the inside?
