Our new third grade reading program focuses on the skills of phonics, fluency, accuracy, comprehension/close reading, and responding to texts. Using the "Wonders" program, we will take approximately two weeks to study one genre or type of text. Beginning with listening comprehension work and a whole-class mentor text, classwork will shift to focus on a variety of levelled texts and small-group instruction which allows for skills development within each genre.

Ideally, students enter third grade reading approximately 93 words per minute, and our next goal (to be assessed in January) will be that students are able to read 110 words per minute. We also teach, model, and practice a variety of comprehension strategies, to help students develop a deep understanding of the texts they read. Be sure to check out each unit to see the stories we are reading in our "Wonders" program.
