What is "Math in Focus" (or Singapore Math)?

What is the Math in Focus Curriculum?

Math in Focus is a curriculum with problem solving as the center of math learning and concepts taught through real-world, hands-on experiences. Problem solving is at the heart of the Math in Focus Curriculum, with five key aspects of instruction supporting that goal, including attitude and metacognition (as well as skills, concepts, and processes). This program empowers students to develop critical-thinking skills, positive attitudes, and the confidence to persevere—setting the stage for achievement.

Starting with concrete methods of learning (students begin learning concepts through hands-on means), move to pictorial representations of the concept, and finally to using abstract methods.

What Does This Look Like in the Classroom?

A student who is just beginning to learn multiplication, may start by using manipulatives. For example, if they have the problem 2 x 4, they may use cube blocks to create 2 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 2 to help them find the product. As the student begins to get more comfortable with the new concept, they will use pictorial means (drawing 2 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 2), and eventually they will move on to using the arthimetic method.
