This is my 15th year teaching Biology at Dover High School! I think deep down I always knew I wanted to be a teacher - but I didn't plan it that way! I earned a BS in Biology from Fairfield University in Connecticut and a MS in Marine Biology from the University of Charleston in South Carolina. I participated in some really cool research experiences - including population ecology studies of non-native crabs and the effect of increasing land development on the ecological health of tidal creeks. I've even authored and co-authored published scientific papers (my maiden name is Filipowicz).
I graduated wanting to work in the field of marine biology at the intersection of research, education and policy. I spent two years working for the Coastal Management program in New York State before deciding that I missed New Hampshire. Dover High School took a chance on a biology teacher with no high school teaching experience, and I've been here ever since.
I LOVE spending my work day sharing the wonder of science with young people. I've taught every level of regular Biology and various electives (Zoology, Marine Science, and Forensics). This is my second year teaching (and learning) AP Biology. I really enjoy the challenge and am ALWAYS learning new things!
When I am not working - I live on a small farm in Deerfield (about 30 minutes from DHS) with my husband (who is also a high school science teacher) and two energetic and adventurous young boys - Sam (age 6) and Jonathan (age 4). We have a giant vegetable garden, egg-laying chickens, turkeys and pigs. I love to read, garden, do yoga, and will walk/run to sustain an ice cream habit.
