Math--This month we will be continuing to practice many addition and subtraction strategies.   We have started using closed and open number lines.  This is a very useful tool now that we are adding and subtracting to 20.  We are also practicing graphing and geometry.  These topics will come up in more depth later in the year.

Language Arts This will include phonics, printing/writing, and reading.

Reading--  In reading there will be many read-aloud books and activities to go with them throughout the year.  These will be thematic units to include fiction and nonfiction material.  While reading fiction we are focusing on a variety of story elements such as character, setting, and the plot.  For nonfiction we are discussing text features such as labels, pictures, and facts.  We will continue to use a variety of decodable texts that match our weekly phonics lessons.  The students have books in their own book bin to enjoy.  The students have an opportunity to switch books weekly.

Phonics --  The students are now responsible for correct letter formation as well as spacing between words. We will keep practicing short vowels in cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words such as "mat" as well as breaking words into sounds.  We are now adding blends and digraphs to read and write bigger words such as "flag".  We will spend time using words that have trickier sounds such as -all, -oll, and -ull.

Writing -- We are working hard on complete sentences with a "who" and a "what" for every sentence as well as capitalization and punctuation.  These skills will be practiced all year as we build on writing length, details, and a variety of writing genres.  We have also started using our writing journals to write about weekend events and drawing a picture to match.

Social Studies/Science-- This month we will focus on learning about the sun, moon, and Earth as well as Veteran’s Day.
