  • Legos are a great way to expand our imagination and creativity. The things we create can mean so much more than simply a toy. In this session, you will use your creativity to make something out of Lego’s from your sheer imagination that represents something meaningful to you. Your creation can be as small as a few colored blocks stacked on top of each other to a cool car. The idea is that your creation reminds you of something motivational, positive or meaningful which you can keep with you throughout your lifetime. It also can serve as a memento when you look at it later in your life, reminding you of your love for Legos. Here we take something we love to play with every day and add a greater significance to it which we can cherish for a lifetime.

  • Have you ever wondered how musicians produce high quality audio tracks? Are you a music learner or an enthusiast who is interested in learning to make music at home? Do you want to learn music recording to make tracks such as ‘Path to Purity’?

  • Here are some of the learning objectives that we will be working towards in this course:

      • Understanding what a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) is and what it is used for.

      • use of GarageBand software to create a new project, add new tracks with different instruments/vocals.

      • Recording simple music with a keyboard controller and using pre-recorded tracks or loops. • Using audio effects such as reverbs, delays, equalization etc. • Basics of mixing and mastering to produce the final track. This will be final outcome.

  • Pre-requisites:

      • Basic understanding of music. If you have learnt some form of music (vocals or instruments) for at least a year, that will be helpful. Experience in managing audio equipment (mics, mixer, amps/speakers etc.) is also beneficial.

      • Having a MacOS device (preferably a Mac laptop or desktop) with GarageBand software installed.

      • It is preferable that students use a second monitor (or device) for the Zoom screen. I will be performing live demonstrations and you will look at the Zoom screen and perform the task on your own.

      • Participants who are familiar with a keyboard (or piano) are highly encouraged to purchase a MIDI keyboard controller that can be connected to the laptop via USB to make full utilization of the course. Alternatively, if you can connect your keyboard (if you already have one) to GarageBand, that is also fine. It is fairly straightforward to learn to use a keyboard. Here is an example of a USB MIDI controller on Amazon. If you don’t purchase one, pre-recorded samples will be provided to you.

  • *** Amrit Venkatesh is the YA from Des Moines who had put together the music track for the 2019 SSE Labor Day song “Path to Purity.”
