I am always interested in hearing about what students do outside of their school day. They have great suggestions about books, sports, and places to visit. When students have experiences outside their school day, they are building background knowledge. Background knowledge is important for reading comprehension because it helps readers make connections, draw conclusions, and understand text. I thank families for including their children in every day activities like chores, fishing, and shopping. Activities like these help children to build knowledge that will help them to be successful in school.
Students are always welcome to ask about my interests, too. Many students already know that reading is one of my favorite things to do, inside and outside of school. When I'm not reading and/or working, I enjoy spending time with my family - especially if we can be outdoors.
