Setting a visual timer can be helpful when breaking down tasks into smaller time frames. For example, a 15 minute timer could be set for homework so that it's not so overwhelming. After 15 minutes, your child could have a set break prior to returning to school work for another 15 minutes. You can set a timer on a microwave, oven, or phone, or you can download a timer app. Listed below are some links to recommended timer apps for kids.
Some kids respond well to sticker charts/point sheets that acknowledge positive behavior. I've attached a copy of the sheet we use at school, and I've modified it for home use. Each day, you can keep track of your child's day with the point sheet. A happy face means he/she did great and followed expectations. A middle face means he/she needed 1 or 2 reminders, but then he/she turned things around. A sad face means he/she wasn't able to turn things around even after reminders. The goal is to get 80% (mostly happy and middle faces) each day. On the document below, there is also a cheat sheet for adding up the points each day- there is a possibility of 48 points each day. A happy face is 2 points, a middle face is 1 point, and a sad face is zero.
You can incorporate a prize with the point sheet too. You can choose a small prize each day if your child makes his/her goal, or you can have his/her work towards a larger prize after so many days of meeting her goal. You can post a blank calendar on the wall in which you put stickers on each day your child meets his/her 80% goal on the point sheet. For example, if he/she meets his/her 80% goal 6 out of 7 days each week, he/she can earn a prize (extra IPad time,, extra TV time, a favorite ice cream treat, etc.).

Families- when students are angry or upset, it can be hard for them to work through their challenges until they calm down. At Cleveland, I use a glitter jar as a visual to help students calm down, and it also acts as a type of timer. The student and I wait to work through the challenge until all of the glitter has settled in the bottom of the jar. This gives the student the chance to take deep breaths (sniff in, blow out) while the glitter settles. It takes about 2 minutes for the glitter to settle. Then if the student is calm, we can begin to work through the challenge.
Here are some resources if you are interested in trying this at home. The first is a children's cartoon that shows the glitter jar in action. The section is a video tutorial of how to make the glitter jar at home if you'd like. The third is an amazon link to the glitter jar I use at school if you'd rather purchase a jar instead of making something. Please reach out to me at kpeterson@sasd.net with any questions. Updated 4/25/2020.

Families- here is a great resource on how to incorporate PBIS while at home. PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is a behavior program that is used in every public school in the Sheboygan Area School District. PBIS focuses on the following three behavior expectations (The Cougar Way): Safe, Respectful, & Responsible. PBIS explains HOW to be safe, respectful, and responsible in each location within the school, and then positive behavior is acknowledged with PAWS slips. Students can then cash in their PAWS at school store, and they can enter their PAWS into a weekly drawing. Feel free to also incorporate PBIS into your home during this time. The documents below give examples of how to do this- the document on the right is also in Spanish.
