This Collection invites submissions on the mechanisms, impacts and response strategies of extreme weather and climate extremes, including cross-sectoral, multi-scalar and system-level analyses of related events. We will consider original contributions with robust data, methodological innovation, and real-world applications for climate adaptation and mitigation.
Extreme weather and climate extremes involve interactions across atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial systems, (e.g., Marine Heatwaves, ENSO, Polar vortex, hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires, and floods). Shaped by climate change, they affect ecosystems, human societies, and key economic sectors, underscoring the need for effective monitoring, prediction, and mitigation strategies. These efforts are essential to enhancing climate resilience and advancing progress toward SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) in vulnerable regions.
This Scientific Reports Collection welcomes original research on Climate and weather extremes. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. The Computational Climate Extremes and Impacts Lab (C-CEIL) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) invites applications for a PhD position studying the physical processes and dynamics underlying persistent warm-season weather extremes in a changing climate. Highly motivated candidates with strong interests in atmospheric dynamics, climate variability and extremes, climate change impacts on extreme weather events, and land-atmosphere interactions are strongly encouraged to apply by 15 July 2026. Further details can be found here.
