Madeline Smith

GIN President

Maddy is currently in 12th grade and has been a student at SAS since 2009. She joined the service community in eighth grade through the Middle School Global Issues Network club. Maddy has participated in GIN conferences around Asia in Singapore, Bali, Kalimantan, and Shanghai. Alongside her leadership roles in Chinese Honor Society and Mission Muskaan, Maddy works hard to bring the SAS community together and promote service.

Elizabeth Frey

GIN Officer

A lover of all things nature, Elizabeth has been a member of GIN from 9th grade . She has attended conferences in Kalimantan and Shanghai. Elizabeth leads rainforest committee by taking weekly trips to our school's rainforest and tending to the nursery. Elizabeth is in 11th grade, and in addition to service, is a Vice President of SAS's House Student Council and is a member of the basketball team.

Christina Yoh

GIN Officer

Currently in 11th grade, having been at SAS for ten years, Christina has always been involved in service in some way shape or form. In 9th grade, she joined Global Issues Network because she loved the thought of being able to network with other like-minded individuals in tackling global issues. Outside service, Christina is passionate about running, watching Netflix, and baking.

Evelyn Zhang

GIN Officer

Evelyn, a current junior that has been a SAS student since kindergarten, has always been passionate about making important connections with others in order to address global issues. This year is her third year in the Global Issues Network club since joining as a freshman, and since then, she has supported GIN’s Digital Divide and GINergy initiatives. Outside of Global Issues Network, Evelyn is passionate about medical research, cooking, and is an avid cellist.

Chris Kang

GIN Officer

Having been part of GIN since 7th grade, Chris has been a dedicated member of GIN for 4 years. He has attended and participated in many GIN conferences in Singapore, Kalimantan, and Shanghai. Other than GIN, Chris has invested himself in multiple areas of service, such as Digital Frontiers, Metta home, and Community-21. His hobbies include playing the cello, playing the piano, and graphic design.

DJ Park

GIN Officer

DJ, a junior at SAS, has been a passionate member of the Global Issues Network club since the beginning of his High School career. He has travelled the world and lived in three different countries. In his free time, he likes to go on spontaneous mini-excursions with his friends. DJ has participated in GIN conferences hosted by international schools across Asia and is looking forward to hosting the oriGIN symposium.

Dr. Martha Began

Having been a sponsor of GIN at SAS for over ten years, Dr. Began desires to launch young people toward their futures equipped with strong STEM skills, prowess in design thinking and mastery in communication. In her teaching and co-curricular advisement, she ensures students are grounded in empathy, humility and gratitude. She nurtures students’ desire to be proficient contributors to the common good of both more and less economically developed communities in Southeast Asia. Knowing the utility and influence of networking with like-minded folks drives Dr. Began to support opportunities to foster global citizenship in young people.

Mr. Steve Early

Steve Early is a graduate of Washington State University with a B.S. in Biology and a M.S. in Environmental Science. He has worked as a high school science instructor at the Singapore American School since 1992.

Steve has been a board member of the Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) since its inception in 2007. His twin passions are conservation and education.
