Sarratt School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

It's beginning to look at lot like Christmas here in school - the stage is up, the tree is decorated (thank you to Mr Whitewood), songs are ringing out through the corridors and 150 little Christmas elves were spotted running around the grounds today! This of course was all in aid of the Peace Hospice in Watford. The children all had a wonderful time as you can see from the snaps below. All sponsorship donations are to be returned to school by Monday 13th December.

Here are some of the events we have scheduled for the rest of the month:

Wednesday 8th December and Thursday 9th December:

9.15am KS1 Nativity Year 1 and 2 children to perform the Christmas Story on stage. Due to Covid safety measures, we will need to limit the tickets to 1 per child - please make sure you have booked via Parentmail. The production will be filmed and shared with all families following the shows.

Friday 10th December:

We will also be having a Break-The -Rules Day with a Festive twist to raise money for our wonderful SPA - see details below.

Should you have any questions about any of the events in school, the team is always happy to help - just give us a call or drop us an email.

A huge thank you to those of you who have bought a book for our new school library - the box is now in the school entrance for families to drop off. Please see the information below for the links to the wishlist for your child's age group.

We also have news below from one of our Y6 children, who has definitely summed up the true meaning of Christmas with an appeal you may be interested in supporting - I know I will!

But first, let's see who has made it into the Gold Book this week...

Warmest regards,

Gold Book

Reception

This week we have 3 entries in the Gold Book for Reception!

Lolly - for trying harder with her recorded pieces of work.

Darcie -for trying her best and being more careful when drawing.

Chloe - for taking more pride in the presentation of her recorded work and adding more detail.

Well done girls!

Year 1

This week's entrants are Lola and Levy. Lola is a perfect role model for the class. Not only is she always ready to learn, but she also supports her peers, encouraging them to do their best. A fabulous attitude to have Lola.

Levy has come back to school keen to learn and is an absolute star. He has clearly practised his sounds at home and is turning into a fine mathematician!

Year 2

Harry is our gold book entry for this week. Harry has made solid, consistent progress with his reading since the start of Year 2. This has enabled Harry to enhance his comprehension skills on a deeper level. Harry can now employ skills such as prediction, retrieval, sequencing, and inference. It is a pleasure to hear Harry read and have lively discussions about the content of the texts. Very well done Harry!

Year 3

This week Year 3 continues to fill our classroom with their angelic and harmonious voices. The sounds and cheers of Christmas have entered Sarratt, especially when Year Three euphoniously chores our carols. It is a pleasure to hear so many of them enjoying their singing and they all have naturally tuneful voices which blend so well together. I hope all Year 3 parents will be able to join us on Monday the 13th of December for our Christmas sing along.

This week Year 3 has also been baking again, making Chocolate Chelsea Buns. This involved lots of kneading (pausing to give our arms a break), then kneading some more! Zoe (our marvelous school chef) baked our Chelsea Buns and we all got to have a nibble of our own creations. Some people may have been a little too liberal with the cocoa powder but I think they were a hit, (I have posted the recipe on the Year 3 Google Classroom) and you may want to substitute the cocoa powder for some Nutella (which we were obviously not able to use in school).

Nevertheless, all this excitement and more mess created could have caused Year 3 to erupt in chaos. However, I am putting all of Year 3 in the Gold Book this week for being such a marvelous team who love to help one another, because they tidied, scrubbed, swept and washed every surface until it was spotless. They did this independently with everyone participating and contributing to the efforts. Parents, Grandparents and Carers you should all be very proud of your children, they are a credit to you all and I just hope they help at home just like they do at school (they cannot give an excuse now :) ).

Year 4

It has been assessment week for Year 4 and without exception they have all worked incredibly hard, showing off what they are able to do in their maths and English. Miss Scarlett and I have been very impressed by their commitment to undertaking the assessments and working so hard. Thus, we would like to put them all into Gold Book as we are proud of them all and their achievements. Thank you, Year 4. Well done.

Year 4 would also like to share with you their film of the Diwali story. The film below was written by everyone in Year 4, puppets were made by Year 4 and performed by Year 4 . The children recorded their work whilst Anna Serby filmed and edited things. Well done, Year 4. A truly spectacular film!

Year 5

We have been thinking about our core value of compassion and its importance in our interactions with others in Year 5 this week. Within our English unit, we have discussed how Beowulf's 'unwavering eyes' allow him to see when others are only looking. From this, people feel that he is an open and honest character. Somebody in our class who resembles these characteristics in his interactions with others is Nathan. He listens with interest to what others have to say and always responds with enthusiasm and kindness. He also has incredibly witty ideas that bring joy and laughter into our lessons. Well done Nathan, your kindness and compassion has a big impact on us all!

Year 6

We have two entries for Year 6.

Firstly, Jake is in Gold Book for always making us smile! His warmth and sense of humour have definitely kept us going this week. Miss Lavers was particularly impressed with his maths on Wednesday, where he was confidently rounding 7-digit numbers to the nearest hundred thousand.

Our second entry is Brooke. She is mature and kind. Even faced with hurdles, Brooke is determined and a lovely member of the Year 6 team. She deserves a shout out for this!

Well done to both Jake and Brooke!

Daisy Rose's Christmas Charity Appeal

Earlier this week, I was contacted by one of our wonderful Year 6 children with a very well written and thoughtful request. Please join us at school in supporting Daisy-Rose, who is one of our school's Creative Ambassadors, in her appeal by dropping off a gift for a child age 10+ at the school office by 15th December.

You can find out more from Daisy Rose's kind words below:

Dear Mrs O’Hare,

I hope your well and are having a lovely weekend.

As Christmas draws near and we get excited about Santa’s visit, I had the idea of helping children less fortunate than myself.

I would like to ask the parents of our school if they could buy a small extra present this year. These presents would be for the children of our Watford Hospital, who are poorly or are undergoing cancer treatment.

I have spoken to the Starfish Ward at Watford Hospital, and they have said they would love some gifts for the children. The age range of gifts they would need, would ideally be for age 10+.

I believe these small acts of kindness could bring some joy and happiness to all the boys and girls who may be spending Christmas at hospital this year.

I would need your help to get the word out to the parents, but I would take the responsibility for delivering the presents to the Starfish Children’s Ward.

Please could you kindly ask Mrs O’Brien’s lovely team if they will allow people to leave all donations in the office.

I would propose a deadline date for gift donations of 15th December.

Parents wouldn’t need to go worry about wrapping the presents as me, my Mum and Dad will wrap them.

I hope you will consider my idea and I will look forward to hearing from you soon,

Kindest regards,

Daisy-Rose (Year 6)

Books for School

It’s that time of year when we are all busy buying gifts for Christmas. This year we are inviting you to add Sarratt School to your Christmas list and buy a book for our new school library.

We have created wishlists on Amazon of storybooks, non fiction, collections and novels that will really boost our collection and inspire our children to read. The books are a combination of old favourites and modern texts. We have created a list for each Key Stage - just click on the link below.

We simply ask that when you receive your book, you or your child adds a note in the cover to let us know who it is from. All you need to do then is drop off your book into the box located in the new entrance lobby.

We are also grateful for all preloved books that are in good condition.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Warmest regards,

Mrs O’Hare and Mrs Serby

Covid - Important Information

Lateral Flow Tests

We have additional lateral flow tests available for families in the school entrance lobby. Please drop in to collect a pack. Many of our positive PCR test results came from positive lateral flows so please do feel free to take as many as you and your family need.

This week the DFE implemented new guidance for schools with the temporary introduction of new measures as a result of the Omicron variant.

Changes to the guidance include:

• updated advice on Tracing close contacts and isolation to reflect the change in measures for close contacts of suspected or confirmed Omicron cases

• updated advice on Face coverings to reflect the change in measures – they are now recommended in communal areas in all schools for adults and for pupils from year 7 onwards

• replacement of references to Public Health England with references to the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA)

• updated information in the Other considerations section on vaccination of under 18 year olds

• an updated Travel and quarantine section to reflect that pupils arriving from abroad will need to isolate and test on arrival

• an updated Educational visits section to advise you consider whether to go ahead with any planned international educational visits

Guidance for parents and carers can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-for-parents-and-carers-of-children-attending-out-of-school-settings-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak

The changes have very little effect on Primary Schools. However, with cases of Covid in School, we have implemented our own measures as part of an Outbreak Management Plan along with the Covid Response Team at HCC. This Outbreak Plan will remain in place while we have cases in school.

The measures outlined include:

· Cancelling non-essential indoor visits and visitors in classes with high case numbers

· Increased distancing of class bubbles including cancelling Key Stage assemblies and postponing rehearsals of Christmas productions for classes with multiple cases

· Increased hygiene and cleaning measures

· Mask wearing in school for all staff and visitors in communal areas

Along with measures already in place:

· Staff lateral flow testing at least twice a week

. Staggering of playtime and lunchtime

. Increased ventilation

. Staggering of drop-off and pick-up

Again, we are extremely grateful for your understanding during these difficult times and hope things can improve for all very soon.
