Sarratt School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy Red Nose Day! Today children and adults exchanged one item of their normal school attire for something red in support of the Comic Relief Charity. We had everything from socks to tops, hair accessories, red nails and even red hair! Thank you to everyone for showing your support and don't forget to donate at https://www.comicrelief.com/rednoseday/

We are coming to the end of the Spring Term already and taking bookings for Summer Term Breakfast Club. If you would like to sign up, please contact Miss Presswell in the school office. See more details below.

Let's see who made it into our penultimate Gold Book of the term!

Warmest regards,

Mrs O'Hare

Gold Book

Reception

This week's entry is Selbie for "fantastic" sounding and blending to read as well as segmenting to spell CVC words. She persevered with learning the skills and is enjoying her success!

Year 1

The Year One gold book entry has to go to Roddie this week. He has settled down very well into the Spring term and he has developed an excellent attitude to his school work. He has maintained his reading skills and has moved up another level in our reading scheme. He is trying his best in all his lessons now and he is taking enormous pride in his achievements. Very well done Roddie.

Year 2

This week's entry for year two is Rafi. Inspired by the book Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French, we have been using our imagination to write our own diaries. Here is an extract;

I was in the forest near my house, but I was not in any old part of the forest, I was in the deepest, darkest part of the forest. This was the area that I was forbidden to enter. Why was I there at all?

Wonderful writing Rafi using conjunctions, expanded noun phrases, alliteration and question sentences - well done.

Year 3

This week, Year 3 have risen to the challenge of completing several Maths and English 'challenge' papers, with very impressive results; not only in their scores but also their attitudes and positivity towards the tasks. I think I can safely say they all LOVE completing these. (Let's hope this attitude remains forever...). Despite this however, we have had another busy week of discovery: examining the gruesome and tragic effects of volcanoes (particularly Mount Vesuvius and the charging of the devastating pyroclastic cloud). We have also experimented to understand how light and reflection enables us to see, alongside many more exciting learning opportunities; including our continued development of multiplication. One element of multiplication and division this week - which has caused a few heads to be scratched - was doubling and halving, however I think we have cracked this nut now and the proof comes in the form of our Gold Book entry this week... Jack Gridley.

Jack has arrived back to school after lockdown raring to go... exemplified by his practical and real-world use of doubling and halving. I was laying out some plates for a science experiment and Jack shared, completely unprompted, 'you will need 12 plates because there are 24 of us and half of 24 is 12, therefore there are 12 tables. Jack then said, 'I can check my calculation by doubling 12 which makes 24!' This application of our Maths is exactly what we love to see here at Sarratt. Jack completed this calculation and explained his thinking clearly and using all the appropriate mathematical language. The class and I were very

We look forward to our teacher Mr. Gridley helping us in our Maths over the coming term.

Here's a snap of last week's entry Lucia and the class with the wonderful picture book we studied in English, The Fabulous Fly Books of Morris Lessmore.

Year 4

We have had a fabulous week in Year 4 - well done everyone. We have also welcomed Miss Judd to Year 4 who will be working with the children alongside me for the next 8 weeks. It is great to have her on board.

Special mentions are for the following children:

Skye has shown wonderful determination to complete her English writing work this week. She has completed the challenges I have set and exceeded them, too. Well done, Skye.

Sadie: For her very positive attitude to the start of this term and her work. She is pulling out all the stops and is trying even harder than ever to be the best that she can be. Fantastic.

Rory: for our work in exploring 1066. We are using a new piece of software to create a timeline of the events of 1066. Rory has been working hard to follow the complex instructions AND gather the correct historical information together before presenting it in his own way, ensuring that the events are clearly written and presented. Well done, Rory. This is a challenge for everyone but you have approached it with calmness and patience. Well done.

Year 5

Greta has had a great attitude towards her learning, both during her remote learning and since returning to school. She is becoming less afraid to make mistakes and now sees them as an opportunity to learn. She also takes such pride in the presentation of her work and has begun to ask questions in order to improve her writing further. In the picture, you can see her proudly showing her guide to space, bursting with fascinating facts. She is looking forward to one day being able to share it with some of the children in KS1. Well done Greta!

Year 6

There are two Year 6 entries this week: Lottie and Leon. Not only do they work fantastically as a pair, they have both tried really hard to explore new literary concepts in our Frankenstein topic and are gaining confidence sharing their ideas in the class.

Junior Journalists

We hope you’re having a great day!

We will describe what life at school is like, and how we felt about home learning over the past eight weeks.

So, let’s get started…

Firstly, we are going to be telling you about what home learning was like for us. It was almost like being pushed away from people and left us feeling rather isolated. There were some tough times back then, but everyone is in the same boat now and we are all happy now that we’re back together again.

We are also looking forward to doing lots of fun activities and getting about. Some of our favourite things to do are: Going out, traveling, and getting to know the world and even better spending quality time with our family and friends.

Also, we are heartbroken to say goodbye to one of the members of the Junior Journalists:

Hi, it’s me Lauren. I am the one moving. I found out a month ago that I could move to Welwyn Garden city. I was surprised because the day before I had thought it would be five years until we found a house nearby. One Tuesday my mum went to view the house. It was smaller than we thought it would be, but it is a nice area mum said. Then, my mum accepted the house! I’ve enjoyed my time as a Junior Journalist and will miss you all.

We will miss Lauren too and hope she enjoys her new school and house.

What you can do to help

We really need your help, as parents and carers, to support these latest developments and ensure our schools can remain open and safe for all children and staff. There are some simple things you can do to support your school and community:

• Drop children to school or collect them and leave straight away – please do not wait or stand around at the school gates as this puts you, your children, school staff and other families at risk

• If you know that your child’s school entrance will be busy, please wear a face covering when attending – your school may also ask that parents and carers wear a face covering for drop off and pick up, please take their advice

Don’t arrange playdates, sleepovers or parties – even if your children are now in a school bubble, bubbles only exist in school alongside stringent infection control measures. Outside of school, the latest Government guidance still applies to parents and children

• If you have older children, please explain they cannot hang out with their friends just yet – we know kids will find it hard to understand why they can’t spend time with their friends from their school bubble outside of school. Please explain if we all follow the guidance now, we will hopefully be able to spend time together soon

• Do not send children to school if they, or anyone in your household, has any symptoms of coronavirus
