Senior Transitions

Senior Transitions is a class I started teaching the same year I started as Librarian. This class is an Adult Living 101 class where I try to introduce as many tasks that students should know as they become adults. Dolly Grause our local seamstress comes in to teach them a unit on sewing.

I take them downtown to Unruh's Service where he shows them how to change oil and make sure they know proper air pressure for their tires and how to check all fluid levels. We do a short unit on nutrition to help them understand their body needs nutritious food to work properly. We then do a unit on etiquette and manners when the Kayla Henrichs from the Extension office comes in. After these two units we plan a meal where they are required to dress up and utilize the etiquette they now know, as well as planning and cooking their own meal with the nutrition knowledge they learned.

We also talk about what college life will be like and touch base about sex trafficking and predators. I do not purposely try to scare them but make sure they understand the dangers, and where sex trafficking is most dangerous.

I have them research the town they are going to college or to live in to find out what activities are available.

We also do a project on buying/building a house. They get to design or purchase and have to run an amortization schedule, and show me what their projected earning will be in their field after college graduation/ or work after high school.
