Community health entrepreneurship is an important concept in the context of universal health coverage in rural communities. It involves developing innovative solutions to address the needs of rural communities and providing access to quality healthcare services. This includes initiatives such as community-based health insurance schemes, mobile healthcare services, telemedicine, and other initiatives that focus on improving access to healthcare services for people living in rural areas. By leveraging technology and partnerships with local organizations, these entrepreneurs are helping to provide essential services such as preventive care, diagnosis, treatment, and education.
Community health entrepreneurship can also help reduce disparities between urban and rural populations by increasing access to quality healthcare services, which can ultimately lead to improved overall health outcomes for individuals and families living in rural communities. They are also working to create a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem by creating new business models that reduce costs while improving access and outcomes for all those involved.
Using a micro-entrepreneurship model to increase access to care for the underserved, community health entrepreneurship is in a unique position to address the healthcare needs of rural communities. The community health entrepreneur must be familiar with the area and its surrounding communities; they need to have strong relationships with local providers and must be able to advocate for their clients. They build business partnerships within their rural community and are capable of organizing people who are interested in improving healthcare services locally. They work across sectors such as education, governmental, nonprofit, and private businesses.
SantePreneurs Inc., a social health business, seeks to emulate the small business model of Healthy Entrepreneurs and LivewellZambia in Cameroon.
Healthy Entrepreneurs, a Dutch-based social enterprise, strives to give those living in rural areas or disadvantaged settings access to essential medicines and medical services. This organization presently operates in five low- and middle-income countries, four of which are in Africa and one in Latin America. In early 2015, Healthy Entrepreneurs started their community health entrepreneurship program in Uganda and it is still ongoing. This model ensures that essential medicines and health services are available through a network of micro-entrepreneurs within the community, providing an inexpensive, accessible, and sustainable healthcare solution.
Livewellzambia is another community health entrepreneurship initiative looking to provide universal health coverage in rural areas. This initiative was founded by a team of health entrepreneurs who are passionate about making healthcare available to everyone. Livewellzambia works with local healthy entrepreneurs to offer primary healthcare services and preventive care to those living in rural areas. They have constructed clinics in remote areas and are training local health workers to render basic medical services. The goal of Livewellzambia is to reduce mortality rates and enhance the quality of life for people living in rural settings.
Our community health entrepreneurs (CHEs) come from a variety of backgrounds and have different levels of business and health-related experience. SantePreneurs aim to raise everyone's knowledge through our onboarding training. CHEs learn about fundamental health principles, a variety of health goods, and the business acumen required to start their own health enterprise during their training. SantePreneurs encourage continues education by providing mentoring assistance and retraining opportunities.
SantePreneurs' Community Health Entrepreneurs are trained to be the first responders in health care, as well as triage, identify and refer serious health issues. They are supported by a decision support app that guides them through the diagnosis and helps the CHEs connect patients to the nearest Primary Care units and hospitals
The Business Concept of SantePreneurs Inc was selected within the 2022 GIZ Business Ideas for Development Challenge, receiving a business development Grant of 7000 Euros. SantePreneurs partners with local health entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs by providing them with start-up capital as well as mentorship, training, and technical assistance. The social business then helps the entrepreneurs to form a business plan that is in alignment with their target customers' needs and desires, which will be presented at a Micro-entrepreneurial Network (MEN) meeting. Through these initiatives, more people in rural Cameroon can access quality healthcare services at an affordable cost. Thus, community health entrepreneurship is helping to bridge the gap between the lack of resources and the need for quality healthcare services in rural Cameroon.
